US levies new sanctions on key Syrian bank

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration added new sanctions on a Syrian bank Wednesday as a top White House official said the U.S. wants to economically throttle the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad and cut off salaries of pro-government thugs blamed for the grisly massacre in Houla.

The Treasury Department said the Syria International Islamic Bank has been acting as a front for other Syrian financial institutions seeking to circumvent sanctions. The new penalties will prohibit the SIIB from engaging in financial transactions in the U.S. and will freeze any assets under U.S. jurisdiction.

With the Obama administration unwilling at this point to pursue military options in Syria, the U.S. has relied heavily on economic sanctions as a means for pressing Assad to leave power. The United States will host other nations in Washington next week to look at ways to tighten international sanctions further.

"We are strangling the regime economically," White House deputy national security adviser Denis McDonough said.

David Cohen, Treasury undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, said the toll taken by sanctions on Syria is "mounting day by day."

"They're drawing down their reserves without a ready means of replenishing those reserves," Cohen said.

The White House also blamed Iran for stirring up violence inside Syria and said Assad's fall would be a huge blow to Tehran. The United States is increasingly linking Syria and Iran rhetorically and tactically, applying economic pressure with and without help from the United Nations or other countries.

Iran is Syria's only staunch defender in the Middle East, and the Syria crisis has united Sunni Arab neighbors who see in Syria a way to weaken Iran, their main Shiite enemy.

"The Assad clique will end up, ultimately, in the dustbin of history and the people of Syria will have the chance to determine their own destiny," McDonough said. "When that happens, it will also be the most profound strategic setback that Syria's closest ally, Iran, has faced in decades. That is surely why Iran has provided material support and advice to the regime in brutalizing the Syrian people."

Speaking to a Brookings Institution forum in Doha, Qatar, McDonough pointed to what he called a recent "stunning" admission from Iran that its armed forces were joining the fight in support of the regime in Syria, and said Iran had tried to backtrack and "cover up" the announcement.

He blamed the Assad regime squarely for the massacre of 108 civilians last weekend in the town of Houla, and said claims that the killings were carried out by unaffiliated roughnecks are "a lie." Assad's associates pay the pro-government gunmen known as the shabiha, he claimed.

"Our objective is straightforward: Starve the regime of the resources it requires to pay the army, and deprive Assad's cronies of the money they need to buy the shabiha's brutal conspiracy."

The violence in Syria is spiraling out of control as an uprising against Assad that began in March 2011 has morphed into an armed insurgency.

In the wake of the Houla massacre, the United States and several other countries expelled Syrian diplomats to protest the killings.

McDonough said the U.S. is also lobbying Russia to distance itself from its ally Syria and apply pressure on Assad to leave office. A negotiated exit similar to one the U.S. helped broker for Yemen's longtime leader is one possibility, McDonough said, but he offered little optimism that U.S. arguments are gaining traction.

"I won't speak for any other government," White House press secretary Jay Carney said in Washington. "I would simply say that it is our belief, and it's the belief that we express in these conversations, that supporting the Assad regime is placing oneself or one's nation on the wrong side of history."

The U.S. has also sought United Nations action against Syria, but those efforts have been stymied by Russia and China, both of whom have veto power on the U.N. Security Council.

Susan Rice, ambassador to the United Nations, said the most likely scenario is that the peace plan crafted by special envoy Kofi Annan will fail.

She said it's preferred that Assad implement the Annan plan immediately. If he doesn't, the Security Council should increase sanctions.

Russia criticized the diplomatic expulsions, calling them "counterproductive," and has said new Security Council action would be premature.

Cohen said he plans to travel to Russia to discuss Syria. He said he thinks Russia shares the goal of a more open political system, although so far Russia has been a dogged defender of Assad. He also said some of Russia's commercial ties to Syria are troubling. He did not elaborate, but Russia is a trading partner to Damascus and has supplied the regime with weapons, food and medical supplies.

The Origin Genesis (Core i7-3930K) ($5,894 direct) is an update to the Origin Genesis ($6,499 direct, 4 stars) gaming desktop we looked at in 2010. It has a new six-core Intel Core i7-3930K processor (aka Sandy Bridge?E) and three Nvidia GeForce GTX 680 graphics cards. These are some of the most powerful components you can currently buy, and naturally the system is made to achieve the pinnacle of performance on multiple tasks including multimedia and gaming. Is the Genesis better than our current ?ber-gaming Editors' Choice, the Maingear Shift Super Stock (Core i7-3930K) ($5,289 direct, 4.5 stars)? Read on to find out.

Design and Features

This version of the Genesis uses a lightly customized Bitfenix Shinobi XL chassis, which is a towering, black-painted behemoth with a windowed side panel. It has the look of an imposing gaming rig, worthy of inclusion in the $5K club. The system has six USB 3.0 ports (four on the top panel), whereas others are limited to two inconveniently placed ports in the back. There are seven USB 2.0 ports as well, for slower peripherals like game controllers, keyboards, and mice. There's a specialized "SuperCharge" port on the top of the system, which is a 2.5-amp USB port for charging your phone or tablet; it's a nicety that gadget-laden folk will welcome. The Genesis also has a FireWire 400 port, two Ethernet jacks (each can access a separate network), S/PDIF digital audio out, and analog audio jacks. The three GTX 680 cards provide a total of six DVI ports, three DisplayPort, and three HDMI ports; you can funnel all of this power through a single DVI port, or you can configure a surround setup with three monitors and 3D glasses (sold separately). The Genesis comes with a BD-RE Blu-ray burner that also reads and burns CDs and DVDs. With this system, you're well covered for entertainment.

The inside of the system is roomy, although the video cards restrict expansion somewhat. There is one free PCI Express (PCIe) x1 slot, but the video cards block your access to it. Two solid-state drives (SSDs) in a RAID Level 0 array provide a speedy platform for running your OS and programs, and a 2TB 7,200rpm drive gives you plenty of extra capacity as well. There is also room for an additional three optical drives or 5.25-inch devices and up to five hard drives (which you install on removable sleds). There are only two free SATA ports on the motherboard to service any additional drives, however. There are four free DIMM slots in case you need more than the included 16GB. A 1,200-watt power supply gives the necessary juice to everything, including the interior lighting, accomplished with multiple red LEDs, that gives you a uniform glow by which you see the hardware you've paid so dearly for.

Like most custom-built gaming systems, the Origin Genesis comes preinstalled with the operating system (Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit), the hardware drivers, minimal utilities, and not much more. That's a good deal for gamers, who never want to be have an extra piece of bloatware to blame for a poor showing on the game grid.

Performance

The Genesis oozes performance. The six-core processor has been overclocked to an insane 4.9GHz, which is 100MHz faster than the overclock on the Maingear Shift Super Stock (Core i7-3930K). (Both are miles ahead of the Core i7-3930K's 3.2GHz stock clock speed.) As such, the Genesis is faster than the Maingear on multimedia benchmarks like our Handbrake video conversion (51 seconds for the Genesis, 54 seconds for the Shift) and Photoshop CS5 (2:12 Genesis, 2:15 Shift) tests. But to be honest, you'll hardly notice a difference of three seconds when you're rushing through a project. Both are faster than stock-clocked Core i7-3930K systems like the iBuypower Chimera 4-V1 ($2,499 direct, 4 stars).

The Genesis' three graphics cards are good for more-than-playable scores on all our benchmark tests at all settings, though ultimately the Maingear proved faster at the DX11-heavy Lost Planet 2. That said, both delivered insane frame rates, though you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between 207 frames per second (fps) and 232fps during real gameplay. If there's any nit to pick about the system's 3D performance, it's that the cooling fans on the graphics cards kick into full-power mode during strenuous gameplay and therefore push a lot of air through the system. It's not a lot compared to some older gaming PCs, but it still produces a din that's hard to ignore in a quiet room unless you're wearing noise-cancelling headphones.

Ultimately, the Origin Genesis (Core i7-3930K) provides an excellent high-end gaming experience, but it's not that much faster than the Maingear Shift Super Stock (Core i7-3930K), which costs more than $600 less. The Genesis is worth keeping on your short list, to be sure, but the better buy remains the Maingear Shift Super Stock.

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russian tycoon Mikhail Fridman on Monday unexpectedly announced his resignation as chief executive of TNK-BP, a sign of rising tensions between shareholders at the Russian venture of British company BP.

TNK-BP, which is owned in equal parts by BP and a group of Russian billionaire shareholders known as AAR, said in a statement that Fridman is due to step down as CEO and chairman of the board in 30 days. It did not specify the reason, but BP's representative in Russia, Vladimir Buyanov, cited "personal reasons."

Fridman is considered one of the most influential people in the venture. He has been at TNK-BP's helm since 2009 and was to head it through 2013.

TNK-BP has been plagued by shareholder conflicts since it was formed in 2003, and Fridman's appointment as the chief executive three years ago looked like a sign of reconciliation between two rival groups of shareholders.

But those tensions seemed to resurface last year, when a potentially

huge deal BP was hoping to sign with Russian state-owned firm Rosneft to extract oil in the Artic broke down after AAR blocked it, claiming BP should be pursuing such deals through TNK-BP.

A source close to the Russian shareholders told the Associated Press on Monday that Fridman resigned because the equilibrium between BP and AAR's investors has been lost and can no longer be maintained. The source, who asked not to be named because of the sensitivity of the issue, said TNK-BP management "was not prepared to work in an environment of constant pressure and mistrust from BP's side" and that "BP has lost the trust and credibility of AAR."

The source claimed that BP has attempted to interfere directly with decision-making at TNK-BP by threatening the management with legal action if their decisions are not approved by BP.

The source, however, insisted that AAR is committed to its investment in TNK-BP and did not contemplate selling its stake.

TNK-BP's board of directors hasn't met since December and has been unable to replace two directors who resigned in December. Without a quorum on the board, the company was forced to cancel plans of distributing dividends.

The company said that while it searches for a replacement for Fridman, it will be run by "a group of executives who hold powers of attorney related to their areas of responsibility."

BP sought to play down the importance of Fridman's resignation, saying he was not involved in day-to-day operations. Buyanov said BP has pledged to work with AAR to appoint a replacement "as soon as reasonably possible." AAR did not comment on the matter.

TNK-BP's shares on Moscow's MICEX stock exchange dipped immediately after the announcement but recovered later to hover 1.3 percent higher than Friday's close, in line with the market.

East Texas man accused of robbing store with rake

CHEROKEE COUNTY, TX (KLTV)- The Angelina County Sheriff's Office is charging an Alto man with aggravated robbery after he allegedly robbed a store using a rake early Sunday.

According to a press release, deputies responded to a burglar alarm at the Polk's near the Idlewood subdivision on US 69 North at 3:24 a.m. When they arrived, they learned a man came into the store with a towel wrapped around his head and threatened employees using rake-like instrument.

The suspect demanded money and ordered the employees to a back room of the store. The suspect then took cash from the register, beer and tobacco and left the store in a white Buick, according to the report.

Deputies and officers with Lufkin Police located and stopped the vehicle and identified the driver as Calvin Lewis Rushing, 43, according to the report.

Rushing still had the towel and rake in the car, according to the report, and matched the description from the surveillance video.

Rushing has previous convictions of robbery, aggravated robbery, burglary and escape and was out on parole for a robbery conviction. The Texas State Board of Paroles has put a hold on Rushing in the Angelina County Jail.

Vatican faces widening of leaks scandal

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican faces a widening scandal that in one short week has seen Pope Benedict's butler arrested, the president of its bank unceremoniously dismissed and the publication of a new book alleging conspiracies among cardinals.

It was a poisonous Pentecost Sunday for the pope, who likely had the tumultuous events of the past week on his mind as he celebrated a mass in St Peter's Basilica on the day regarded as the birthday of the Church.

On Saturday his personal butler, Paolo Gabriele, 46, was formally charged with stealing confidential papal documents in the scandal that has come to be known as "Vatileaks". Some of the documents allege cronyism and corruption in contracts with Italian companies.

One prominent cardinal, illustrating the growing emotion of the debate in Vatican circles, wrote in an Italian newspaper that the pope had been betrayed just as Jesus was betrayed 2,000 years ago.

The scandal, which has been brewing for months, has hit the very heart of the Roman Catholic Church. Gabriele - now known in Vatican statements as "the defendant" - was until Wednesday night the quiet man who served the pope's meals, helped him dress and held his umbrella on rainy days.

The pope made no reference during his two public appearances on Sunday to the scandal or the arrest, which aides said had "saddened and pained" him.

"I feel very sad for the pope. This whole thing is such a disservice to the Church," Carl Anderson, head of the Knights of Columbus charity group who is also a member of the board of the Vatican bank, told Reuters.

The night before the Vatican announced an arrest as part of its investigation of the leaks, it was rocked by the sudden ouster of the president of its bank, formally known as the Institute for Works of Religion (IOR).

Anderson, among those who voted no-confidence in Italian Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, said in a telephone interview with Reuters that the president was sacked because of "a fundamental failure to perform his basic responsibilities".

BANK TRANSPARENCY

Anderson rejected accusations by Gotti Tedeschi that he had been ousted because he wanted the bank to be more transparent.

"Categorically, this action by the board had nothing to do with his promotion of transparency," Anderson said. "In Fact, he was becoming an obstacle to greater transparency by his inability to work senior management," Anderson said.

Anderson said the Vatican is still aiming to make the OECD's "white list" of states with financial transparency and other Vatican sources have pointed to the president's very public ouster as an example of the drive for transparency.

A memorandum of the meeting that ousted Gotti Tedeschi and obtained by Reuters said he had shown "progressively erratic personal behavior" and failed to defend the bank "in the face of inaccurate media reports".

Gotti Tedeschi's ouster was significant in internal Vatican politics because it was another blow to the prestige of Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the pope's right-hand man, who was instrumental in bringing the Italian in from Spain's Banco Santander to run the IOR in 2009.

Earlier last week saw the publication of "His Holiness," a new book by Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi, who was first leaked some of the documents in January and aired them on a television show.

He says he was given the material by people loyal to the Church who wanted to expose corruption and that he did not pay anything for the documents.

After the events of last week, the atmosphere in the walled city-state was glum on Sunday. Vatican sources said they could not rule out more arrests, particularly if Gabriele named any accomplices.

The leaks scandal prompted one prominent Churchman, Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, the former archbishop of Milan and himself once a candidate for the papacy, to appeal to Church leaders "to urgently win back the trust of the faithful".

PERSONAL BETRAYAL OR BIGGER PLOT?

Martini, writing in an Italian newspaper, said the pope had been "betrayed" just as Jesus was betrayed 2,000 years ago, and that the Church would have to emerge from the latest scandal cleaner and stronger.

Still, few believed that Gabriele, a shy and private man, could have acted on his own and some said he may have been an unwitting pawn in a Vatican power struggle.

"Either he lost his mind or this is a trap," a friend of Gabriele's in the Vatican told the newspaper La Stampa.

"Whoever convinced him to do this is even more guilty because he manipulated a simple person."

While news of Gabriele's arrest has filled pages and pages of newspapers in Italy and beyond, the Vatican's own newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, has ignored the story.

Some say this may be because the paper itself has been an instrument in a power struggle involving reciprocal mud-slinging between allies and enemies of Cardinal Bertone.

"This is a strategy of tension, an orgy of vendettas and pre-emptive vendettas that has now spun out of the control of those who thought they could orchestrate it," Church historian Alberto Melloni wrote in the Corriere della Sera newspaper.

The leaked documents included letters by an archbishop who was transferred to Washington after blowing the whistle on what he saw as a web of corruption and cronyism, a memo that put a number of cardinals in a bad light, and documents alleging internal conflicts about the Vatican bank.

Feminism is a belief system that is suppose to support women and make their lives better. Not all feminists believe all the same things. There are so many different movements within feminism. I am not a feminist. I am a Christian. As a Christian, I do not agree with modern feminism. It is a selfish belief system disguised as the social betterment of the treatment of women. Feminism is deeply rooted in self-love and self-happiness. That?s really what feminism is all about. They claim it?s all about a woman being free to choose to live their own lives however they want?freedom of choice. But that is contrary to what Scripture tells us. Any teaching that tells us to turn our attention to self is wrong and sinful. Does that mean that all feminist movements are sinful? No, I don?t think so. I think some of the original movements of feminism were truly for the betterment of the treatment of women. Modern feminism is a whole different animal.?

I do not feel that modern feminism?s beliefs can be justified through scripture and that much of what they teach is actually anti-Christian.? I felt led to discuss three of the most?prevalent movements in modern feminism and defend my beliefs with scripture. So over the next three Fridays, I?m going to be posting about these three movements.??? I am simply a woman who wants to please God more than I want to please myself or others.? A woman should not be in authority over men.? The reason for this is because God created man first and then created woman from the man.? Also, it was woman who was deceived in the garden and then fell into transgression (sin).

A woman?s husband is her authority and she should be in subjection to her husband.? Subjection simply means being under the power, control and government of another.

Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord.? For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body.? But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.? Ephesians 511-14 (NASB)

Now before you get in a tizzy about how being under the power and control of a man leads to abuse, take a look at what the Bible instructs a husband to do.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her,? Ephesians 5:25 (NASB)

So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself;? for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church,? Ephesians 5:28-29 (NASB)

So if a man mistreats his wife, it?s the same as mistreating his own body.? He is to give up his life even for his wife as Christ did for the church.? An abusive husband has fallen into sin and there is NEVER anything to justify their actions.? If a woman is ever in danger of physical abuse, she needs to remove herself from the situation and get help.

It was evident from the very beginning that men were to be in authority over women.??? Women were created by God to be their husband?s helper.

Then the LORD God said, ?It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.?? Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name.? The man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him.? So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. ? The LORD God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. The man said, ?This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.? For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.? Genesis 2:18-24

God decreed that man would rule over women.? God gave the role of authority and leadership to men over women.

To the woman He said, ?I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you will bring forth children; Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he will rule over you.?? Genesis 3:16 (NASB)

From the very beginning the primary role of the man was as ?keeper? (provider) and the woman?s role was defined as ?helper?.

Then the LORD God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it.? Genesis 2:15 (NASB)

Man is considered the primary provider and teacher in the home and the wife is his assistant in home and family duties.

But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.? I Timothy 5:8 (NASB)

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.? Ephesians 6:4 (NASB)

Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.? Titus 2:3-5 (NASB)

This does not mean a woman CANNOT work outside of the home.? But a woman?s primary focus should be to her husband, children and home.

I know that there are people who will not agree with me on this, and that?s fine. Some will argue that it?s a cultural issue. But, I believe that that Bible is either completely true or completely false. You either believe WHAT IT SAYS or you interpret it to fit what you want it to say. I will trust in the word of God over the word of Man any day of the week. In my opinion and in the Word of God, a woman should be under the authority of men, yet many disregard what the Bible says and do it anyway or try to justify their actions. God can most certainly use women to further His Kingdom and there are MANY opportunities to do so which do not include having authority over men.

Now, the Associated Press reports that world's first nationwide electric car network -- this time in Israel -- has been given its first test. This only equates to four battery stations at the moment, with a further 40 to follow in the second half of the year. However, the firm maintains, that even with the current infrastructure, users could comfortably drive the entire length of the nation. Renault will sell a version of its Fluence EV customized to work with the battery stations for $32,000, with different mileage options on offer. Is this the future of electric motoring? We don't know, but anything that's this much quicker than overnight charging is fine by us.
