Three killed, seven injured in Swiss workplace shooting

ZURICH (Reuters) - Three people, including the suspected assailant, have been killed in a shooting at a factory near the Swiss city of Lucerne, police said on Wednesday.

Seven others were injured in the attack which happened just after 9 a.m. (0800 GMT) at a wood processing company in the town of Menznau, west of Lucerne, the police said in a statement.

Emergency services were at the scene and the area had been cordoned off. A news conference is due at 2 p.m. (1300 GMT).

Last month, a gunman killed three women and injured two men in the Swiss village of Daillon, stirring a debate about Switzerland's firearm laws that allow men to keep guns after their mandatory military service.

There is no national gun register but some estimates indicate that at least one in every three of Switzerland's 8 million inhabitants keeps a gun, many stored at home. Citizens outside the military can apply for a permit to purchase up to three weapons from the age of 18 in a country where sharp shooting and hunting are popular sports.

A shooting in the Zug regional parliament in 2001, in which 14 people were killed, prompted calls to tighten laws, but the majority of Swiss citizens rejected a proposal in 2011 for extra measures such as lock-ups for guns outside service periods.

Green Blog: A Report Card for Global Food Giants

The anti-poverty group Oxfam has come up with a scorecard that evaluates the impact that the supply chains of behemoth food companies have on water consumption, labor and wages, greenhouse gas emissions and nutrition.

The goal of the scorecard, called ?Behind the Brands,? is to motivate consumers to pressure companies like Nestl?, Kellogg and Mars to improve their policies on land and water use and the treatment of small farmers, among other things, and to reduce waste and greenhouse gas emissions.

?Customer choice helps these companies build brand loyalty and value, which helps them build the bottom line,? said Ray Offenheiser, president of Oxfam America. ?These supply chains are what connects the consumer to the farmer in the field, and there is an increasing interest in that.?

Apparel and mining companies have moved to increase the transparency of their supply chains, improving their practices in the process, Mr. Offenheiser said. But food companies are notably opaque when it comes to disclosing how they obtain the ingredients for the food they sell.

In fact, they sometimes openly fight such disclosure, spending tens of millions of dollars recently, for instance, to avoid disclosing the use of genetically engineered ingredients on food packaging. Some have also resisted identifying the countries where their ingredients originate.

But consumers today have more information about the food they eat than ever, and the impact of that knowledge is increasingly clear. The backlash against organic and natural food brands whose corporate parents fought a California ballot initiative requiring the labeling of genetically modified foods persists, even though it was defeated in November. And a 15-year-old recently waged a successful campaign to get brominated vegetable oil, a controversial food additive, removed from Gatorade.

?I think these companies understand that engaging stakeholders, not just shareholders, is a fact of life going forward,? Mr. Offenheiser said. ?Growing market share and customer loyalty as a result of that engagement has a direct impact on the bottom line.?

He emphasized that Oxfam did not wish to dredge up old scandals ? although the report accompanying the new scorecard mentions several ? but rather to create what he called ?a race to the top.?

Two giant European food companies, Nestl? and Unilever, scored highest on the initial scorecard, followed by Coca-Cola and PepsiCo. But no companies received Oxfam?s highest ratings across the board. Nestl?, which has worked to reduce the use of water in its processes, was awarded a 7 out of 10 in the water and transparency categories of the scorecard. Unilever received the same score for its treatment of smallholder farmers.

Conversely, seven of the ten companies received the lowest score possible for their use of land. Scores for the treatment of women working in agriculture were generally low as well. Seven of the companies received a grade of ?extremely poor? or ?failing? for the impact of their businesses on climate change.

Russia wants U.S. to help foster dialogue in Syria

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia will urge the United States on Tuesday to press the Syrian opposition to hold direct talks with Damascus, but fears "extremists" now have the upper hand among President Bashar al-Assad's opponents.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said before leaving for Berlin to meet Secretary of State John Kerry that the new U.S. top diplomat seemed to grasp the gravity of the crisis in Syria.

He said Washington should lean on the Syrian opposition to drop demands that Assad must leave power before talks can start.

"In our contacts with other countries that can influence the parties in Syria, we have noticed a growing understanding of the need to influence both the government and, first of all, the opposition so that they do not come up with unrealistic requests as preconditions for the start of dialogue," Lavrov said after talks with Dutch Foreign Minister Frans Timmermans.

"This is what we will discuss with John Kerry today. During our latest phone conversation I had the impression that he has an understanding of the acuteness of the situation in Syria."

Moscow and Washington have been at loggerheads over Syria, where 70,000 people have been killed in a nearly two-year-old conflict that began with a crackdown on street protests against Assad's rule.

Russia has been Assad's staunchest ally and, with China, blocked three U.N. Security Council resolutions aimed at mounting pressure on him to end the violence.

Washington has sided with the Syrian opposition in seeking Assad's removal from power.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem said in Moscow on Monday that the government was ready for talks, but opposition leaders and rebel commanders insist Assad must go first.

Kerry responded dismissively to Moualem's offer, saying it was hard to understand how people having Scud missiles fired at them would take an offer of dialogue seriously. Syria denies using ballistic missiles in the fighting.

He also appeared to promise more concrete support to Assad's opponents, without saying whether the United States might rethink its earlier aversion to arming or training them.

"We are determined that the Syrian opposition is not going to be dangling in the wind," Kerry said in London on Monday.

Lavrov signaled that the prospects for direct talks in Syria had receded in the past few days.

"A few days ago it seemed that conditions for the sides to sit down for talks ... were getting clearer. There were calls in support of a quick start to dialogue," he said.

"But then came denials of such an approach. It seems extremists, who bet on a military solution to Syria's problems and block initiatives to start dialogue, have for now come to dominate in the ranks of the Syrian opposition, including in the so-called (Syrian) National Coalition," he added.

Western countries and some Arab states have accused Russia, a long-standing arms supplier to Damascus, of shielding Assad, whose Syrian opponents have bitterly denounced Russian policy.

Moscow has hit back by saying it has worked hard to try to persuade the two sides in Syria to start talks and accusing its Western allies of failing to do enough to support those efforts.

It also says support for the rebels plays into the hands of militant Islamists, a theme Assad himself often evokes.

Olympic athlete, Oscar Pistorius , in court Friday Feb. 22, 2013 in Pretoria, South Africa, for his bail hearing charged with the shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. The defense and prosecution both completed their arguments with the magistrate soon to rule if the double-amputee athlete can be freed before trial or if he must stay behind bars pending trial. (AP Photo)

(AP) ? Oscar Pistorius on Monday informed South African authorities that he wants to resume athletic training while on bail for the murder case against him, a government official said.

A spokeswoman for the Olympic runner, however, denied that he was making immediate plans to return to the track while awaiting trial for the Feb. 14 shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

"Absolutely not," said spokeswoman Janine Hills. "He is currently in mourning and his focus is not on his sports."

The double-amputee Paralympian discussed bail terms with his probation officer and a correctional official at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court in the capital, Hills said. The guidelines will determine his daily routine until his next court appearance on June 4.

"It's his wish to continue to practice," James Smalberger, chief deputy commissioner of the department of correctional services, said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.

Smalberger said the issue came up because authorities need to know his movements whenever he leaves the home where he is staying.

The timing of any resumption of training was uncertain.

Pistorius' longtime coach, Ampie Louw, declined to comment on any training plans for the runner, referring questions to a spokeswoman for the athlete's family.

Louw had said when the runner was in detention that he wanted to put him back into training in the event that he was granted bail. But he had also said Pistorius could be "heartbroken" and unwilling to immediately run again.

Pistorius, who was released on bail Friday, is staying at the house of his uncle, Arnold, in the affluent suburb of Waterkloof in Pretoria. He faces life imprisonment if convicted.

Pistorius is charged with premeditated murder in the killing of Steenkamp, in the early hours of Valentine's Day. Prosecutors say the pair had an argument before Steenkamp was killed; Pistorius says he mistook her for an intruder and shot her accidentally.

Smalberger said officials will visit Pistorius at his uncle's home at least four times a month, and that the runner indicated his interest in training again. More planning must occur before the start of any training.

"We want a training program from his coach so that we have backup for his movements," Smalberger said.

"He's not under house arrest, but his movements need to be known to us so that we don't pitch there and he's not there," he said. "We agree on 'free time' normally during the course of the day, and in the evening we expect him to be home."

Pistorius' 2013 season had been geared towards the Aug. 10-18 World Championships in Moscow, where the South African 4x400 relay team will be trying for another medal to add to the silver it won at the 2011 edition.

Chief Magistrate Desmond Nair had set bail at 1 million rand ($113,000). The 26-year-old track star was also ordered to hand over his passports, turn in any guns he owns and keep away from his upscale home in a gated community in Pretoria, the scene of the crime.

He cannot leave the district of Pretoria without his probation officer's permission and is not allowed to consume drugs or alcohol, the magistrate said.

The Simple Dollar is a blog for those of us who need both cents and sense: people fighting debt and bad spending habits while building a financially secure future and still affording a latte or two. Our busy lives are crazy enough without having to compare five hundred mutual funds ? we just want simple ways to manage our finances and save a little money.

Here are four things you can do starting right now to make a radical shift in your finances and set you on a better track.

1. Cancel your cable or satellite service.
Cancel it. Pay the termination fee if you have to. Get a small antenna and a converter box (if you need one) and just watch what you can get over the air.

The average cable/satellite bill, last I heard, was around?$86 a month. That?s a pretty sizeable chunk of an average American family budget, adding up to above $1,000 a year. There?s energy savings here, too ? if you?re not powering up a cable box, your energy bill will drop a bit.

The average American?watches 2.8 hours of television a day. Without television to constantly watch, you?ll suddenly find that you have more time to do all of the things that you?ve been meaning to do but somehow haven?t had the time for.?

Samsung Video Discovery hands-on

Image

Samsung's really playing up its media chops here at Mobile World Congress. In addition to demoing the new HomeSync Android box, the Korean company is showing off its recently announced service for finding and watching TV content. The product was originally called TV Discovery, but just five days later it's resurfaced under the moniker Video Discovery. This new name is more accurate, as the service does deliver content recommendations for both live programming and movies and TV shows on demand.

We saw Video Discovery demoed with a Galaxy Note 8.0 and a Samsung Smart TV. You'll need a device with an IR blaster to adjust the TV channel or volume, with the app serving as a touchscreen remote. There are several modes for browsing content, including a timeline view that looks almost identical to the standard TV guide menu. You can also browse by genre or view current programming across all channels. When we skimmed through live TV listings, we simply had to tap the large "Watch Now" button next to a listing for the show to turn up on screen a few seconds later.

Perhaps the most useful feature, at least for those of you who know what you want: type in a search, and you'll see results from several content providers, including Blockbuster and Netflix (in the US) in addition to cable channels. Samsung reps said Discovery will also deliver personalized recommendations based on viewing preference and history, but the trade show employees on hand didn't seem entirely confident on some of the features, so we'll have to play with the service a bit more after it launches in April to confirm final functionality. But why not take a look for yourself now? Hit up the hands-on video after the break.

Razer Orbweaver

"I'll never go back." It's a phrase that pops up again and again in comments and customer reviews for the Razer Orbweaver, the follow up to the Razer Nostromo. Gaming keypads?specialized half-keyboards used by gamers?offer a level of comfort and control that even the best gaming keyboards fail to match. The Orbweaver takes everything good about the Nostromo and adds design elements that adjust to your unique hand shape and programmable controls that can be tailored to your games and style of play. With so much going for it, it's easy to see why the Orbweaver is or Editors' Choice for gaming keypads.

Design and Features
The Orbweaver measures 2.2 by 6.1 by 8.0 inches (HWD), and comes with a six-foot-long USB cable. It's considerably narrower than the Logitech G13 Advanced Gameboard, so it won't take up quite so much space on your desk. The Orbweaver's design has a higher palmrest, which actually provides better support than the low-rise G13. What the Orbweaver does not offer, however, is a digital display like that on the Logitech.

The base of the device has large rubber feet, so once you've got it in a comfortable position, it will stay put. The Orbweaver is made up of three adjustable parts: the two-piece wrist rest, a keypad with 20 programmable buttons, and a thumb module with a thumb-friendly joystick and two thumb buttons. The entire device is shaped and molded to provide easy access to all of your control keys while also cradling the wrist and palm in a comfortable position, letting you play for hours without experiencing wrist strain.

The keypad has 20 programmable buttons, with the center buttons?conveniently placed just where the fingertips fall?set by default to the commonly used WASD keys. The keys feature mechanical key switches with a short throw and light actuating force, making it a breeze to use. The keys are also backlit, with bright green backlight which can be adjusted through several levels of brightness.

Given that the Logitech G13 similarly offers 22 buttons, it makes sense that Razer would try to step up its game with an equally impressive array, but I think it's trying a bit too hard. The Nostromo's best feature was that it didn't over-complicate an already intimidating device. The addition of adjustable modules and more sensitive buttons is a huge plus, but the sheer number of buttons, and the resulting need to differentiate them on the fly, could have been thought out a little more.

What's missing from the new Orbweaver?along with Razer's previous gamepad, the Nostromo?is tactile distinctions between the regular WASD keys and the surrounding buttons. There is a small nub at the bottom edge of one key, similar to the type used to differentiate the home keys on a keyboard, but it's too subtle. The Logitech G13, on the other hand, puts unmistakable (and comfortable) indentations on each of the WASD keys.

The thumb controls have been improved over the previous Razer Nostromo, with a smaller, more sensitive thumb-friendly joystick, and two thumb buttons. The joystick, which replaced the thumbpad found on the Nostromo, is positioned perfectly, with just enough shape to the head to be used comfortably. The bottom button, mapped to the spacebar for jump commands, features a lever design and mechanical switch that offers just the right amount of force?letting you click it with very little force, but with just enough firmness to prevent accidental clicking. Taken together, the Orbweaver has the best thumb controls found on any of the gaming keypads we've reviewed.

The Orbweaver adds several features over the previous Nostromo. The Nostromo offered some rudimentary customization with a two-position palmrest, while the Orbweaver offers several more adjustable parts. The two-piece palmrest lets you adjust both the horizontal position (letting you slide it further back from the keys) and the angle of the textured soft touch palmrest. The thumb module?which has the thumb-friendly joystick and two thumb buttons?can also be independently positioned. The result of all these moving parts is that the Orbweaver can be tweaked to be comfortable for almost any size hands.

In addition to all of the adjustable modules on the device, the buttons are all programmable with Razer's Synapse 2.0 dashboard. You can remap keys, save multiple profiles, and cycle through eight different customizable keymaps, letting you configure every detail of the Orbweaver to match not only your hand, but you gaming library as well. Plus, Razer Synapse lets you customize all of your current Razer products in the same dashboard, without the need for multiple management programs and driver installations.

Performance
I test gaming keypads using Mirror's Edge, a game absolutely dependent upon keyboard control. Controls were intuitive and smooth during gameplay, and the keypad proved very usable whether in the middle of a frantic race across rooftops or while executing a complicated wall run cross jump. The only issues I had have already been mentioned? the lack of tactile differentiation for the WASD keys makes it easy to get your keys mixed up after you use another command.

On the other hand, the thumb buttons have a light actuation force, and are positioned to prevent accidental clicking. The thumb buttons and joystick are also better positioned, in part because the entire thumb module of the device can be repositioned.

Using a dedicated gaming keypad like the Razer Orbweaver is the sort of change that makes it difficult to switch back; the comfort and support are significantly better than a regular keyboard?even a top keyboard like the Corsair Vengeance K90?while the perfectly positioned, customizable controls top even the best programmable keyboards. Compared with the Logitech G13, the Orbweaver is more comfortable, more adjustable, and offers better control while gaming. All this makes it our Editors' Choice for gaming keypads.

COMPARISON TABLE
Compare the Razer Orbweaver with several other keyboards side by side.

(AP) ? The mysterious death of a 30-year-old Palestinian gas station attendant in Israeli custody stoked new West Bank clashes Sunday, along with Israeli fears of a third Palestinian uprising.

A senior Palestinian official alleged that Arafat Jaradat was tortured by Israel's Shin Bet security service, citing an autopsy he said revealed bruising and two broken ribs.

Israel's Health Ministry said the autopsy did not conclusively determine the cause of death, but that the bruising and broken ribs were likely the result of attempts to revive the detainee.

Jaradat's death came at a time of rising West Bank tensions, including several days of Palestinian marches in support of four hunger-striking prisoners in Israeli lockups. In all, Israel holds nearly 4,600 Palestinians, including dozens who have never been formally charged.

Frozen Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, the recent re-election of Israeli hard-line Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a Palestinian cash crisis and the Palestinians' sense of being abandoned by the Arab world seem to have created fertile ground for a third Palestinian revolt.

Over the weekend, Israel's army chief convened senior commanders to discuss the growing unrest.

Jaradat's death "is liable to become the opening shot" in a third uprising, Israeli military commentator Alex Fishman wrote in the Yediot Ahronot daily Sunday, arguing that the "Palestinian street has been boiling with anger for a number of weeks now."

However, Israeli officials have previously expressed concern about a new uprising, only to see bursts of Palestinian protests fizzle.

The first uprising, marked by stone-throwing protests and commercial strikes, erupted in the late 1980s and led to Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. The second uprising broke out in 2000, after failed talks on a final peace deal, and it was far deadlier, with Israel reoccupying the West Bank after bombings and shootings.

In recent years, the West Bank has been relatively calm. Despite recent tensions, the Palestinian self-rule government has not broken off security coordination with Israel in their joint campaign against Islamic militants.

Palestinian activists also say they learned from the mistakes of the armed revolt a decade ago and are turning to more creative protests against Israel's 45-year rule over lands they want for a future state.

Former Palestinian security chief Jibril Rajoub, speaking in Hebrew on Israel Radio, tried to reassure Israelis, declaring Sunday "on behalf of the entire Palestinian leadership that there is no plan to lead to bloodshed."

Jaradat, a father of two from the West Bank village of Saeer, died in Megiddo Prison in northern Israel on Saturday, six days after his arrest on suspicion of stone throwing.

Jaradat's attorney, Kamil Sabbagh, said his client told an Israeli military judge Thursday during a hearing that he was being forced to sit for long periods during interrogation. The detainee also complained of back pain and seemed terrified to return to the Shin Bet lockup, although he did not have any apparent signs of physical abuse, Sabbagh said.

After the court hearing, the judge ordered Jaradat to be examined by a prison doctor.

The Shin Bet said that during interrogation, Jaradat was examined several times by a doctor who detected no health problems. On Saturday, he was in his cell and felt unwell after lunch, the agency said.

"Rescue services and a doctor were alerted and treated him," the statement said. But "they didn't succeed in saving his life."

On Sunday, Israel's forensics institute performed an autopsy attended by a physician from the Palestinian Authority.

After being briefed by the Palestinian physician, Issa Karake, the Palestinian minister of prisoner affairs, told a news conference late Sunday that Jaradat had suffered two broken ribs on the right side of his chest. The autopsy also showed bruises on Jaradat's back and chest.

Israeli officials initially said Jaradat apparently died of a heart attack, but Karake said the Palestinian physician told him there was no evidence of that.

Jaradat "faced harsh torture, leading to his immediate, direct death. Israel is fully responsible for his killing," Karake said.

Israel's Health Ministry said Jaradat did not suffer from disease and that it was not possible yet to determine his cause of death conclusively.

The Israeli human rights group B'Tselem said the Shin Bet routinely holds detainees in isolation for extended periods during interrogation, keeping them in cells where the lights are never turned off.

Citing prisoner affidavits, B'Tselem spokeswoman Sarit Michaeli said physical mistreatment has dropped sharply in recent years but has not disappeared.

Detainees have filed some 700 complaints about mistreatment by Shin Bet agents in the past decade, but none has led to a criminal investigation, she said.

In the West Bank, meanwhile, Palestinians protesting Jaradat's death threw stones at Israeli troops in several locations Sunday, including the city of Hebron and at a checkpoint near the military's Ofer prison.

In the clash near the checkpoint, troops fired live rounds, shooting the 15-year-old son of the commander of the Palestinian Preventive Security Service in the chest and stomach, said Palestinian health official Dr. Ahmed Bitawi. The teen, Walid Hab al-Reeh, was in stable condition, while another man was wounded in the arm, Bitawi said.

The Preventive Security Service is key to security coordination with Israel. The Israeli military said it was aware of a report that a Palestinian youth was seriously hurt by gunfire, but could not confirm that soldiers used live rounds to disperse the protest.

Kadoura Fares, who heads a Palestinian group advocating for prisoners, urged Palestinians on Sunday to keep demonstrating. He also said that one of the four hunger-striking prisoners, Jafar Izzeldeen, was moved to a hospital Sunday because his condition was deteriorating.

Recent West Bank protests have focused on the fate of prisoners, an emotional Palestinian consensus issue.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians have been imprisoned since Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem in 1967, meaning virtually every Palestinian family has had someone locked up.

The detainees are held on a range of charges, from stone-throwing to deadly attacks. Most Palestinians embrace them as heroes resisting occupation, while Israelis tend to view them as terrorists.

Joe the Plumber's latest gig: Gun giveaways

Joe Wurzelbacher (Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)

After an unsuccessful bid for Congress last year, Joe Wurzelbacher, better known as "Joe the Plumber," recently launched a new conservative advocacy website?and announced this week he's giving away an AR-15 rifle to promote it.

"Despite what national news commentators say, the AR 15 is NOT an 'assault weapon' or 'weapon of mass destruction,'" the site reads. "In honor of this magnificent rifle, JoeForAmerica.com is giving away a new AR 15 to the lucky man or woman who wins this drawing."

In the wake of a string of deadly mass shootings, Congress is considering new rules for gun ownership, including increased background checks and bans on certain weapons. The AR-15 is one of the weapons that some Democratic lawmakers hope to ban as part of the effort. Wurzelbacher said he's giving away the rifle, valued at $1,200, as a form of protest, saying he was inspired by Vice President Joe Biden, who on Tuesday told an audience to buy a shotgun instead of an AR-15.

"Ever since Obama?s election team and media thugs made me famous for asking a simple question in 2008, I?ve had more than my share of death threats by people who are by definition at least a little crazy," Wurzelbacher wrote on his site. "Guns are in my house. High capacity, loaded, and not locked in a safe."

MASK OFF MEXICO: Leaders in the Government of the United States' southern neighbor ignored Fast and Furious, now exploiting Sandy Hook

MASK OFF MEXICO: Leaders in the Government of the United States' southern neighbor ignored Fast and Furious, now exploiting Sandy Hook

Image

If you ever wondered why the Mexican government seemed to go out of its way to address an operation led by the U.S. Government, designed to put weapons into the hands of drug cartels, who used those guns to murder innocent people, the actions of Mexico's lawmakers may help answer that question. They are lobbying U.S. Senators to force Arizona, California, Texas, and New Mexico to force their citizens to register all guns.

Ben Barrack, conservative talk show host, writer, and author of the new book, Unsung Davids, says that when contrasted with the lack of interest on the part of Mexican officials over Fast and Furious, this attempt by Mexican politicians says quite a bit. ?This basically confirms that Mexican authorities are on-board with the Obama administration's attempt to exploit the Sandy Hook shootings,? Barrack said.

The good news, Barrack says, is that American citizens are beginning to connect the dots when it comes to contrasting those two events. In a local CBS news report in Arizona, citizens were interveiwed about the proposal of Mexican lawmakers and multiple references were made to Fast and Furious. ?The behavior of these Mexican officials is the equivalent of ripping their masks off. They're in on it and it doesn't matter why. Ends do not justify the means,? Barrack said.

Some believe that Mexico is playing ball with the Obama administration because it doesn't want to threaten trade relations with the U.S. ?This would be a form of soft blackmail,? Barrack says, ?and if that's being done to prevent the truth about an operation designed to produce dead bodies to further gun control, we have a big, big problem.?

?Once people begin contrasting the details of Fast and Furious with what is being done in the wake of Sandy Hook, a lot of things become very, very clear. In particular,? Barrack says, ?something people cannot bring themselves to admit.?

To find out what that 'something' is, contact Special Guests today for an interview with Ben Barrack.

Red Sox prospects romp against Boston College

FORT MYERS, Fla. ? An ensemble of Red Sox minor leaguers that included some of the top prospects in the organization cruised to an 11-1 seven-inning victory over Boston College.

Catcher Dan Butler blasted a two-run homer over the 40-feet high wall in JetBlue Park as part of an eight-run third inning that also included an RBI double by Jackie Bradley Jr., a two-run double by Jonathan Diaz and a two-run single by Mauro Gomez.

Gomez paced the offense by going 3-for-3 with a double while driving in two runs. Bradley had an opportunity to display his all-fields approach, lining out to center on a 2-2 pitch in his first at-bat, launching a 1-0 fastball off the base of the fence in left-center in his second plate appearance and lining out to left field in his third at-bat. Outfielder Shannon Wilkerson later added a two-run homer to left.

Xander Bogaerts went 1-for-4 (dribbler to third, lineout to center, liner to deep left that required a nice leaping catch by the Boston College left fielder, and a double to left-center), and more notably, had a successful first game at third base, handling both groundballs that were hit to him including a nice play on a grounder to his left. Still, the novelty of the hot corner was apparent, as he sought advice from the dugout to help position him.

An ensemble of Red Sox relievers limited Boston College to one run on three hits. Koji Uehara worked around a pair of first-inning singles to record a scoreless first, while Andrew Bailey recorded a shutout second inning before Junichi Tazawa gave up the lone run of the game in the third. Oscar Villareal, Jose De La Torre and BC alum Terry Doyle all contributed with scoreless frames before Brock Huntzinger closed it out.

The Sox now have a short workout on Friday before they commence official Grapefruit League play on Saturday against the Rays.

Here?s video of Bogaerts? double:

Canon MREAL Mixed Reality headset hitting US March 1st for $125,000

Canon Mixed Reality AR headset rebranded 'MREAL' for US market

This isn't the first we've heard of Canon's Mixed Reality system -- not by a long shot. The company's trotted its augmented reality headset out a few times before. The camera maker did, however, take the opportunity to shed some light on its US plans for the head-mounted display yesterday at an event held in Manhattan's Classic Car Club. Surrounded by the classy convertibles, the company also unveiled the more streamlined (and vaguely Cypress Hill-esque) MREAL name. As before, the headset is decidedly industry-facing, targeting product prototypers with an augmented reality system that lets designers interact with computer-generated versions of their creations before actually willing them into existence.

The MREAL System for Mixed Reality (that's the full name -- or, if you want to drill down even further: the headset is the HM-A1 and the software platform is MP-100) generates video of one's surroundings using a pair of cameras positioned in front of the wearer's eyes, which is combined with computer-generated graphics. The result is displayed on a pair of small monitors "to create high-impact, three-dimensional images." Amongst the potential target audiences for the product are automotive designers, manufacturers, university researchers and museum exhibit curators. Canon's also planning to open up its SDK to developers, so applications will likely only increase.

As per Canon's press release, the MREAL system is set for a March 1st release, priced on a sliding scale, depending on which configuration you opt into -- though the company tossed out the steep $125,000 price point, along with $25,000 in annual maintenance. The aforementioned press release can be found after the break -- or better yet, have a look at our hands-on with the device right now.

Germany charges 2 with selling Iran drone motors

BERLIN (AP) -- Two Iranian men have been charged with allegedly smuggling dozens of German-made aircraft motors to Iran to be used in its Ababil III surveillance and attack drone, federal prosecutors said Wednesday.

Germany prohibits the export of goods to Iran that could be used for military purposes, abiding by international sanctions.

Iman J. L., a 30-year-old German-Iranian dual national, and Iranian Davood A., 54, have both been charged with violating German export laws, said prosecutors' spokesman Marcus Koehler. The men, whose last names were not given in accordance with German privacy laws, face two to 15 years in prison if convicted.

The Ababil is believed to have a maximum range of about 145 kilometers (90 miles) and can fly up to 4,300 meters (14,000 feet) high. It is primarily designed for surveillance and intelligence-gathering, although German prosecutors said it can also be used as an attack drone.

Iran has used Ababil-type drone for years. The U.S. military said in 2009 that American fighter jets shot down an Ababil III over Iraq.

J.L. is accused of delivering 61 motors in several shipments between October 2008 and October 2009 to Iran through his own import-export business. He is alleged to have used false customs declarations to hide what the cargo was and where it was going. The other man, A., is accused of reselling in Iran at least some of the motors to an unidentified buyer there.

Koehler would not identify the firm that produced the motors, nor say whether they were specifically designed for use in drones. He said only that "because of their design, the motors were suitable for the propulsion the Ababil III system drone, which are used by the Iranian military."

The charges have been filed with the Frankfurt state court, suggesting that the alleged crime took place in that area. The court has not yet decided whether to accept the charges, filed on Dec. 6, 2012, and proceed to trial, Koehler said.

He would not say where the men currently are, but said neither was taken into custody because they were not seen as a flight risk.

Both sides in Syria commit torture, murder, UN says

Aamir Qureshi / AFP - Getty Images, file

By Stephanie Nebehay, Reuters

GENEVA -- A United Nations investigation has concluded that both sides in Syria's civil war have committed war crimes, including murder, torture and the use of children in battle, and investigators said Monday that Syrian leaders they had identified should face the International Criminal Court.

The investigators urged the U.N. Security Council to "act urgently to ensure accountability" for the violations in the conflict, which has killed an estimated 70,000 people since a revolt against President Bashar Assad began in March 2011.

"Now really it's time. ? We have a permanent court, the International Criminal Court, who would be ready to take this case," Carla del Ponte, a former ICC chief prosecutor who joined the U.N. team in September, told a news briefing in Geneva.

The inquiry, led by Brazilian Paulo Pinheiro, is tracing the chain of command to establish criminal responsibility.

AP Photo / Syrian Observatory for Human Rights

In this frame grab from amateur video taken Nov. 1 and provided by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a man said to be a rebel gunman steps on a captured soldier in Saraqeb, northern Syria.

"Of course we were able to identify high-level perpetrators," del Ponte said, adding that these were people "in command responsibility ? deciding, organizing, planning and aiding and abetting the commission of crimes."

She said it was urgent for the Hague-based war crimes tribunal to take up cases of very high officials but did not identify them, in line with the inquiry's practice.

Del Ponte, who brought former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic to the ICC on war crimes charges, said the ICC prosecutor would need to deepen the investigation on Syria before an indictment could be prepared.

Pinheiro, noting that the Security Council would have to refer Syria's case to the ICC, said: "We are in very close dialogue with all the five permanent members and with all the members of the Security Council, but we don't have the key that will open the path to cooperation inside the Security Council."

Karen Koning AbuZayd, an American member of the U.N. team, told Reuters it had information pointing to "people who have given instructions and are responsible for government policy, people who are in the leadership of the military, for example."

The inquiry's third list of suspects, building on lists drawn up in the past year, remains secret. It will be handed over to U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay when its mandate expires at the end of March, the report said.

Pinheiro said the investigators would not speak publicly about "numbers, names or levels" of suspects, adding that it was vital to pursue accountability for international crimes "to counter the pervasive sense of impunity" in Syria.

'Mass killing'
The investigators' latest report, covering the six months to mid-January, was based on 445 interviews conducted abroad with victims and witnesses, as they have not been allowed into Syria.

A look back at the conflict that has overtaken the country.

"The ICC is the appropriate institution for the fight against impunity in Syria. As an established, broadly supported structure, it could immediately initiate investigations against authors of serious crimes in Syria," the 131-page report said.

Pillay, a former ICC judge, said on Saturday that Assad should be probed for war crimes and called for outside action on Syria, including possible military intervention.

Government forces have carried out shelling and air strikes across Syria including Aleppo, Damascus, Deraa, Homs and Idlib, the U.N. report said, citing corroborating satellite images.

"In some incidents, such as in the assault on Harak, indiscriminate shelling was followed by ground operations during which government forces perpetrated mass killing," it said, referring to a town in the southern province of Deraa where residents told them that 500 civilians were killed in August.

'A crime against humanity'
"Government forces and affiliated militias have committed extra-judicial executions, breaching international human rights law. This conduct also constitutes the war crime of murder. Where murder was committed as part of a widespread or systematic attack against a civilian population, with knowledge of that attack, it is a crime against humanity," the U.N. report said.

Those forces have targeted bakery queues and funeral processions to spread "terror among the civilian population."

"Syrian armed forces have implemented a strategy that uses shelling and sniper fire to kill, maim, wound and terrorize the civilian inhabitants of areas that have fallen under anti-government armed group control," the report said.

Government forces had used cluster bombs, it said, but it found no credible evidence of either side using chemical weapons.

Rebels fighting to topple Assad have committed war crimes including murder, torture, hostage-taking and using children under age 15 in hostilities, the U.N. report said.

"They continue to endanger the civilian population by positioning military objectives inside civilian areas," and rebel snipers had caused "considerable civilian casualties," it said.

"The violations and abuses committed by anti-government armed groups did not, however, reach the intensity and scale of those committed by government forces and affiliated militia."

Sunrise Calendar: Interesting idea, deal-breaker implementation

Sunrise Calendar: Interesting idea, deal-breaker implementation

Sunrise Calendar launched in the App Store this week to mixed buzz. It looks interesting but it only works with Google Calendar and requires -- requires -- you to login with Facebook before it will let you start using the app. That's an absolute show stopper for me. I don't need or want to login to a calendar app, and if I did, while Facebook would be a welcome option among many, I won't use any third-party app, not ever, where it's the only option. But that's not all...

I also use more than Google Calendar. My work stuff is on there, but my personal calendars are all on iCloud. Unless/until Apple's calendar is supported on Apple's platform, I lose a unified calendar, which is another deal-breaker for me. Same likely holds true for Exchange users.

I'm also confused as to why Sunrise Calendar is free. Yes, I do look gift-horses in the mouth, especially when there's a chance they'll bite me. Free sounds great, but nothing is ever really free. If I'm not paying, someone else is paying. And if I'm not being sold a product, odds are I'm either being sold as a product, or the product I'm being given for free won't long survive, at least not in the form it's being given me. I've had too many "free" services I've grown to like and depend on shut down, or get sold to Google or someone similar and effectively shut down. Not again.

So this is where my Sunrise Calendar "review" ends for now. Get rid of the forced Facebook login, expand beyond Google Calendar, explain a business model I can trust will be around for a while, and I'll happily give it a full on trial, and who knows, maybe I'll like it and switch to it?

For now, I can't even use it.

If you don't mind Facebook logins, Google-only calendars, or free-as-in-??? apps, check out the video below, and if you like what you see, check out Sunrise Calendar and let me know how it works for you.
