Threat of superstorm launches mass evacuations in coastal areas

SHIP BOTTOM, N.J. (AP) ? Forget distinctions like tropical storm or hurricane. Don't get fixated on a particular track. Wherever it hits, the rare behemoth storm inexorably gathering in the eastern U.S. will afflict a third of the country with sheets of rain, high winds and heavy snow, say officials who warned millions in coastal areas to get out of the way.

"We're looking at impact of greater than 50 to 60 million people," said Louis Uccellini, head of environmental prediction for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

As Hurricane Sandy barreled north from the Caribbean ? where it left nearly five dozen dead ? to meet two other powerful winter storms, experts said it didn't matter how strong the storm was when it hit land: The rare hybrid storm that follows will cause havoc over 800 miles from the East Coast to the Great Lakes.

"This is not a coastal threat alone," said Craig Fugate, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. "This is a very large area."

President Barack Obama was monitoring the storm and working with state and locals governments to make sure they get the resources needed to prepare, administration officials said.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie declared a state of emergency Saturday as hundreds of coastal residents started moving inland and the state was set to close its casinos. New York's governor was considering shutting down the subways to avoid flooding and half a dozen states warned residents to prepare for several days of lost power.

Sandy weakened briefly to a tropical storm early Saturday but was soon back up to Category 1 strength, packing 75 mph winds about 355 miles southeast of Charleston, S.C., as of 8 p.m. Experts said the storm was most likely to hit the southern New Jersey coastline by late Monday or early Tuesday.

Governors from North Carolina, where heavy rain was expected Sunday, to Connecticut declared states of emergency. Delaware ordered mandatory evacuations for coastal communities by 8 p.m. Sunday.

Christie, who was widely criticized for not interrupting a family vacation in Florida while a snowstorm pummeled the state in 2010, broke off campaigning for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in North Carolina on Friday to return home.

"I can be as cynical as anyone," the pugnacious chief executive said in a bit of understatement Saturday. "But when the storm comes, if it's as bad as they're predicting, you're going to wish you weren't as cynical as you otherwise might have been."

The storm forced the presidential campaign to juggle schedules. Romney scrapped plans to campaign Sunday in the swing state of Virginia and switched his schedule for the day to Ohio. First lady Michelle Obama canceled an appearance in New Hampshire for Tuesday, and Obama moved a planned Monday departure for Florida to Sunday night to beat the storm. He canceled appearances in Northern Virginia on Monday and Colorado on Tuesday.

In Ship Bottom, just north of Atlantic City, Alice and Giovanni Stockton-Rossini spent Saturday packing clothing in the backyard of their home, a few hundred yards from the ocean on Long Beach Island. Their neighborhood was under a voluntary evacuation order, but they didn't need to be forced.

"It's really frightening," Alice Stockton-Rossi said. "But you know how many times they tell you, 'This is it, it's really coming and it's really the big one' and then it turns out not to be? I'm afraid people will tune it out because of all the false alarms before ... (but) this one might be the one."

A few blocks away, Russ Linke was taking no chances. He and his wife secured the patio furniture, packed the bicycles into the pickup truck, and headed off the island.

What makes the storm so dangerous and unusual is that it is coming at the tail end of hurricane season and the beginning of winter storm season, "so it's kind of taking something from both," said Jeff Masters, director of the private service Weather Underground.

Masters said the storm could be bigger than the worst East Coast storm on record ? the 1938 New England hurricane known as the Long Island Express, which killed nearly 800 people. "Part hurricane, part nor'easter ? all trouble," he said. Experts said to expect high winds over 800 miles and up to 2 feet of snow as far inland as West Virginia.

And the storm was so big, and the convergence of the three storms so rare, that "we just can't pinpoint who is going to get the worst of it," said Rick Knabb, director of the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Officials are particularly worried about the possibility of subway flooding in New York City, said Uccellini.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo told the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to prepare to shut the city's subways, buses and suburban trains by Sunday, but delayed making a final decision. The city shut the subways down before last year's Hurricane Irene, and a Columbia University study predicted that an Irene surge just 1 foot higher would have paralyzed lower Manhattan.

Up and down the Eastern Seaboard and far inland, officials urged residents and businesses to prepare in big ways and little.

On Saturday evening, Amtrak began canceling train service to parts of the East Coast, including between Washington, D.C., and New York.

The Virginia National Guard was authorized to call up to 500 troops to active duty for debris removal and road-clearing, while homeowners stacked sandbags at their front doors in coastal towns. At a Home Depot in Virginia Beach, employee Dave Jusino said the store was swamped with customers.

"We have organized chaos, is what I call it," Jusino said. "We organize a group of 10 associates, give them certain responsibilities and we just separate the lines, organize four customers at a time, load up their cars and get them out the door and then take the next customers."

Utility officials warned rains could saturate the ground, causing trees to topple into power lines, and told residents to prepare for several days at home without power. "We're facing a very real possibility of widespread, prolonged power outages," said Ruth Miller, spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency.

Warren Ellis, who was on an annual fishing pilgrimage on North Carolina's Outer Banks, didn't act fast enough to get home. Ellis' 73-year-old father managed to get off uninhabited Portsmouth Island near Cape Hatteras by ferry Friday. But the son and his camper got stranded when high winds and surf forced the ferry service to suspend operations Saturday.

"We might not get off here until Tuesday or Wednesday, which doesn't hurt my feelings that much," said Ellis, 44, of Amissville, Va. "Because the fishing's going to be really good after this storm."

Last year, Hurricane Irene poked a new inlet through the island, cutting the only road off Hatteras Island for about 4,000.

In Connecticut, the Naval Submarine Base in Groton prepared to install flood gates and pile up sandbags to protect against flooding while its five submarines remain in port through the storm.

Lobsterman Greg Griffen in Maine wasn't taking any chances; he moved 100 of his traps to deep water, where they are less vulnerable to shifting and damage in a storm.

"Some of my competitors have been pulling their traps and taking them right home," said Griffen. The dire forecast "sort of encouraged them to pull the plug on the season."

In Muncy Valley in northern Pennsylvania, Rich Fry learned his lesson from last year, when Tropical Storm Lee inundated his Katie's Country Store.

In between helping customers picking up necessities Saturday, Fry was moving materials above the flood line. Fry said he was still trying to recover from the losses of last year's storm, when he estimates he lost $35,000 in merchandise.

"It will take a lot of years to cover that," he said.

Christie's emergency declaration will force the shutdown of Atlantic City's 12 casinos for only the fourth time in the 34-year history of legalized gambling here. The approach of Hurricane Irene shut down the casinos for three days last August.

Atlantic City officials said they would begin evacuating the gambling hub's 30,000 residents at noon Sunday, busing them to mainland shelters and schools.

Tom Foley, Atlantic City's emergency management director, recalled the March 1962 storm when the ocean and the bay met in the center of the city.

"This is predicted to get that bad," he said.

Eighty-five-year-old former sailor Ray Leonard said if he had loved ones living in the projected landfall area, he would tell them to leave. Leonard knows to heed the warnings.

He and two crewmates in his 32-foot sailboat, Satori, rode out 1991's infamous "perfect storm," made famous by the Sebastian Junger bestseller of the same name, before being plucked from the Atlantic off Martha's Vineyard, Mass., by a Coast Guard helicopter.

"Don't be rash," Leonard said in a telephone interview Saturday from his home in Fort Myers, Fla. "Because if this does hit, you're going to lose all those little things you've spent the last 20 years feeling good about."

Chinese officials bow to protests against factory

NINGBO, China (AP) ? Thousands of protesters who marched through an eastern Chinese city on Sunday against the expansion of a petrochemical factory won a pledge from the local government that the project would be halted.

The protest, which comes at a sensitive time in China's political calendar, had swelled over the weekend and led to clashes between citizens and police. The Ningbo city government said in a statement Sunday evening that they and the project's investor had "resolutely" agreed not to go ahead with the expansion. The factory is a subsidiary of Sinopec, one of the biggest petrochemical companies in the world.

Outside the government offices where crowds of protesters remained, an official tried to read the statement on a loudspeaker but was drowned out by shouts demanding the mayor step down. On the third attempt, the crowd briefly cheered but then turned back to demanding that authorities release protesters being held inside.

Liu Li, 24, a Ningbo resident, said the crowd did not believe the government's statement.

"There is very little public confidence in the government," she said. "Who knows if they are saying this just to make us leave and then keep on doing the project."

The city government was likely under great pressure to defuse the protest with China's leadership wanting calm for a party congress next month at which the country's new leaders will be named. It was unclear whether local authorities will ultimately cancel the project or continue it when the pressure is lower.

Hundreds of people outside the government offices refused to budge despite being urged to leave by officials. Riot police with helmets and shields then came out of the government compound and pushed the crowd back. Some people including families ran away. Police dragged six men and one woman into the compound, beating and kicking at least three of them. Police also smashed placards and took away flags.

The crowd roared for the protesters' release. Police also briefly detained ITN correspondent Angus Walker outside the offices.

The demonstration in wealthy Zhejiang province is the latest this year over fears of health risks from industrial projects, as Chinese who have seen their living standards improve become more outspoken against environmentally risky projects in their areas.

"The government hides information from the people. They are only interested in scoring political points and making money," said one protester, Luo Luan. "They don't care about destroying the environment or damaging people's lives."

The protests began a few days earlier in the coastal district of Zhenhai, where the petrochemical factory is located. On Saturday they swelled and spread to the center of Ningbo city, whose officials oversee Zhenhai.

Residents reported that Saturday's protests involved thousands of people and turned violent after authorities used tear gas and arrested participants.

Authorities said "a few" people disrupted public order by staging sit-ins, unfurling banners, distributing fliers and obstructing roads.

Early Sunday, thousands of residents began gathering outside the offices of the municipal government. Hundreds marched away from the offices in an apparent effort to round up more support along nearby shopping streets. Police diverted traffic to allow them to pass down a main road.

The crowds in Ningbo are a slice of China's rising middle class that poses an increasingly boisterous challenge to the country's incoming leadership: Armed with expensive smartphones, Internet connectivity and higher expectations than the generations before them, their impatience with the government's customary lack of response is palpable in every fist pump and every rendition of the national anthem they shout.

A 30-year-old woman surnamed Wang said officers took her to a police station Saturday and made her sign a guarantee that she would not participate in any more protests, but she came back Sunday anyway.

"They won't even let us sing the national anthem," Wang said. "They kept asking me who the leader of the protests was and I said that this is all voluntary. We have no leader."

In a sign that censors were at work, the name "Zhenhai" ? the city district where the factory is located ? was blocked on China's popular microblogging site Sina Weibo, and searches for "chemical expansion project" were greeted with the line that "Some search results are not shown according to regulations."

Protester Yu Yibing said he wanted the factory to be closed and his 7-year-old son to grow up in a clean environment.

"As the common people, we need to live in a green environment. This is a reasonable request," Yu said. "But the government only puts out some statement and refuses to see us and also suppresses us. I don't know how else we can express our views."

The Zhenhai district government, which comes under the Ningbo government, said Ningbo's Communist Party chief, Wang Huizhong, and mayor, Liu Qi, had held discussions with local residents Saturday night.

It said in a short statement on its website Sunday evening that the project wouldn't go ahead and that refining at the factory would stop for the time being while a scientific review is conducted.

The official Xinhua News Agency said the planned project was designed to produce 15 million tons of refined oil and 1.2 million tons of ethylene per year and belongs to Sinopec Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Co., which has invested 55.87 billion yuan ($8.9 billion).

Calls to Zhenhai police and the propaganda department of Ningbo police rang unanswered Sunday.

Past environmental protests have targeted a waste-water pipeline in eastern China and a copper plant in west-central China. A week ago, hundreds protested for several days in a small town on China's Hainan island over a coal-fired power plant.

Syria truce collapse shows limits of diplomacy

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria's air force fired missiles and dropped barrel bombs on rebel strongholds while opposition fighters attacked regime positions Sunday, flouting a U.N.-backed cease-fire that was supposed to quiet fighting over a long holiday weekend but never took hold.

The failure to push through a truce so limited in its ambitions ? just four days ? has been a sobering reflection of the international community's inability to ease 19 months of bloodshed in Syria. It also suggests that the stalemated civil war will drag on, threatening to draw in Syria's neighbors in this highly combustible region such as Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan.

"This conflict has now taken a dynamic of its own which should be worrying to everyone," said Salman Shaikh, director of the Brookings Doha Center think tank.

The U.N. tried to broker a halt to fighting over the four-day Eid al-Adha Muslim feast that began on Friday, one of the holiest times of the Islamic calendar. But the truce was violated almost immediately after it was supposed to take effect, the same fate other cease-fires in Syria have met.

Activists said at least 110 people were killed Sunday, a toll similar to previous daily casualty tolls. They include 16 who died in an airstrike on the village of al-Barra in northern Syria's mountainous Jabal al-Zawiya region.

The Observatory also reported a car bomb that exploded in a residential area in the Damascus neighborhood of Barzeh and wounded 15 people, but the target was not immediately clear.

Though Syria's death toll has topped 35,000, the bloodiest and most protracted crisis of the Arab Spring, the West has been wary of intervening. There is concern about sparking a wider conflagration because Syria borders Israel and is allied with Iran and the powerful Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

There are already increasing incidents of the civil war spilling across borders.

Many in Lebanon blame Syria and Hezbollah for the Oct. 19 car bomb that killed the country's intelligence chief. The assassination stirred up deadly sectarian tensions in Lebanon, where Sunnis and Shiites are deeply divided over the Syrian civil war, raising the specter of renewed sectarian fighting.

Lebanon's two largest political coalitions have lined up on opposite sides of Syria's civil war. Hezbollah and its partners who dominate the government have stood by Assad's regime, while the Sunni-led opposition backs the rebels seeking to topple the Syrian government. Assad and many in his inner circle are Alawites ? an offshoot of Shiite Islam and a minority in Syria ? while the rebels come mostly from the country's Sunni majority.

Iraqi Shiites also increasingly fear a spillover from Syria. Iraqi authorities on Sunday forced an Iranian cargo plane heading to Syria to land for inspection in Baghdad to ensure it was not carrying weapons, the second such forced landing this month. The move appeared aimed at easing U.S. concerns that Iraq has become a route for shipments of Iranian military supplies that could help Assad battle rebels.

In Jordan, concern over stability was underlined last month, when its U.S., British and French allies quickly dispatched their military experts to help Jordanian commandos devise plans to shield the population in case of a chemical attack from neighboring Syria.

Turkey's support for the Syrian rebel movement is another point of tension, and Turkey has reinforced its border and fired into Syria on several occasions recently in response to shells that have landed from Syria inside Turkish territory.

The U.S. administration says it remains opposed to military action in Syria and politicians have been preoccupied this year with the presidential election, now a few weeks away.

On Sunday, Syrian warplanes struck the eastern Damascus suburbs of Arbeen, Harasta and Zamalka to try to drive out rebels, according to activists in those areas and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which compiles information from activists in Syria.

In Douma, another Damascus suburb, rebels wrested three positions from regime forces, including an unfinished high-rise building that had been used by regime snipers, according to the Observatory and Mohammed Saeed, a local activist.

Fighting was also reported near Maaret al-Numan, a strategic town along the Aleppo-Damascus highway that rebels seized earlier this month. Opposition fighters including the al-Qaida-inspired Jabhat al-Nusra, have also besieged a nearby military base and repeatedly attacked government supply convoys heading there. The Observatory said the Syrian air force fired missiles and dropped barrel bombs ? makeshift weapons made of explosives stuffed into barrels ? on villages near the base.

The cease-fire was seen as a long shot from the outset. International peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi failed to get firm commitments from all combatants, and no mechanism to monitor violations was put in place.

Jabhat al-Nusra rejected the truce outright. In a video posted this week, the leader of al-Qaida, Ayman al-Zawahri, urged Muslims everywhere to support Syria's uprising.

"It's not just about the Syria military and the army defectors that form the backbone of the Free Syrian Army rebel group anymore," said Hassan Abdul-Azim, a Damascus-based opposition leader. He said there were so many foreign fighters and external actors now involved in the Syrian civil war that only an agreement among the various international and regional powers could put an end to the fighting.

"The truce was merely an attempt by Brahimi to try and temporarily ease the people's suffering in the lost time until the U.S. elections, in the hope that the international community can then get its act together and agree on a diplomatic solution for Syria," he told The Associated Press.

But with the unraveling of the cease-fire, it's unclear what the international community can do next.

Assad allies Russia and China have shielded his regime against harsher U.N. Security Council sanctions, while the rebels' foreign backers including neighboring Turkey have shied away from military intervention. Iran, which is embroiled in its own diplomatic standoff with the West over its suspect nuclear program, is also a staunch supporter of Assad's regime.

The U.S., meanwhile, is averse to sending strategic weapons to help the rebels break the battlefield stalemate, fearing they will fall into the hands of militant Islamists, who are increasingly active in rebel ranks.

"There has been a lack of desire to take the tough decisions," said Shaikh.

"In Washington, they've only been focused on the narrow political goal of their own elections, trying to convince a war-wary public inside the U.S. that we are actually disengaging from the conflicts of the Middle East," he said.

The truce was called as the two sides were battling over strategic targets in a largely deadlocked civil war. They include a military base near a main north-south highway, the main supply route to Aleppo, Syria's largest city, where regime forces and rebels have been fighting house-to-house. It appears each side feared the other could exploit a lull to improve its positions.

Brahimi has not said what would follow a cease-fire. Talks between Assad and the Syrian opposition on a peaceful transition are blocked, since the Syrian leader's opponents say they will not negotiate unless Assad resigns, something he has always refused to do.

In April, Brahimi's predecessor as Syria mediator, former U.N. chief Kofi Annan, tried to launch a more comprehensive plan ? an open-ended cease-fire to be enforced by hundreds of U.N. monitors, followed by talks on a political transition. Annan's plan failed to gain traction, and after an initial decrease in violence, his proposed cease-fire collapsed.

On Sunday, amateur videos posted online showed warplanes flying over the eastern suburbs of Damascus. One video showed two huge clouds of smoke rising from what was said to be Arbeen, and the sound of an airplane could be heard in the background. It was not clear if the video showed the aftermath of shelling or an airstrike.

Another video showed destruction inside the Sheikh Moussa mosque in Harasta. Windows and doors were blown out, glass and debris scattered across the mosque's floor. The narrator broke down as he was heard saying: "Where are the Muslims? Our mosques are being bombed and no one cares."

The videos appeared consistent with Associated Press reporting in the area.

The Syrian government has accused the rebels of violating the cease-fire from the start. The state-run news agency SANA said opposition fighters carried out attacks in a number of areas, including in Aleppo and the eastern town of Deir el-Zour.

Kerrey struggling in Nebraska Senate race

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? Democrats hoped Nebraska's Senate race would be the story of Bob Kerrey's political revival.

Instead, the emergence of Republican Deb Fischer, a previously little-known state senator, has given the GOP its clearest shot at taking a U.S. Senate seat away from Democrats.

Less than two weeks until the election, Fischer enjoys a clear lead.

Kerrey, a former governor and U.S. senator who later served as president of a university in New York was encouraged by national Democrats to make the race. He admits he has struggled with being labeled a carpetbagger in ads by outside spending groups, but he insists he may yet spring a surprise.

Republicans need to net four seats to take control of the Senate if President Barack Obama is re-elected, three if Mitt Romney wins.

New opportunity for rapid treatment of malaria

Friday, October 26, 2012

Researchers have identified a new means to eradicate malaria infections by rapidly killing the blood-borne Plasmodium parasites that cause the disease.

Malaria causes up to 3 million deaths each year, predominantly afflicting vulnerable people such as children under five and pregnant women, in tropical regions of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Treatments are available for this disease, but the Plasmodium parasite is fast becoming resistant to the most common drugs, and health authorities say they desperately need new strategies to tackle the disease.

This new potential treatment uses molecules that interfere with an important stage of the parasite's growth cycle and harnesses this effect to kill them. The impact is so acute it kills ninety per cent of the parasites in just three hours and all those tested in laboratory samples of infected human blood cells, within twelve hours.

The research was carried out by chemists at Imperial College London and biological scientists from the research institutions Institut Pasteur and CNRS in France. Their work is published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

Lead researcher Dr Matthew Fuchter, from Imperial College London, said: "Plasmodium falciparum causes 90 per cent of malaria deaths, and its ability to resist current therapies is spreading dramatically. Whilst many new drugs are in development, a significant proportion are minor alterations, working in the same way as current ones and therefore may only be effective in the short term. We believe we may have identified the parasite's 'Achilles' Heel', using a molecule that disrupts many vital processes for its survival and development."

The research has identified two chemical compounds that affect Plasmodium falciparum's ability to carry out transcription, the key process that translates genetic code into proteins. These compounds are able to kill the parasite during the long period of its complex life cycle while it inhabits the blood-stream. This is in contrast to the majority of antimalarial drugs, whose action is limited to shorter stages of Plasmodium's life cycle.

"One particularly exciting aspect of this discovery is this new molecule's ability to rapidly kill off all traces of the parasite, acting at least as fast as the best currently available antimalarial drug," said Dr Fuchter.

Initial tests also showed the molecules were able to kill strains of Plasmodium that have developed a resistance to current treatments, although the scientists say more experiments are needed to confirm these results.

The scientists hope to refine these molecules, improving their effectiveness and proving this to be a viable strategy for treating malaria in humans. They hope it will lead to the development of an effective malaria cure within the next ten years.

Top Ways to Prevent Diabetes

Below are some of the simple yet effective ways to prevent diabetes:

  1. Reduce your food portion size. Serve less on your plate.
  2. Keep fish, meat, and poultry portions to about 3 ounces.
  3. Eat cured meats and broth in very small amounts because they are high in sodium. However, low sodium broths are also available in powdered forms and cans. Sodium levels does play a major role in both heart diseases and is also one of the best ways to prevent diabetes.
  4. Do not skip your breakfast and eat your snacks and meals at regular intervals.
  5. Do not snack while you are cleaning your house or cooking (this for people who are not working).
  6. When you are eating out, share a single dessert and have a big vegetable salad.
  7. Cook with less butter and oil. Fry, bake, or broil with low sodium broth or non-stick spray.
  8. Drink one glass of water before meals, which would reduce your chance of over eating.
  9. Make healthy choices when you eat out. You can try grilled chicken and choose a salad by skipping French fries.
  10. While eating, do not watch TV, instead listen to music. You tend to eat more while watching TV.
  11. Eat slowly as it takes twenty minutes for the stomach to send signals to the brain that you are full.
  12. Try to eat small and frequent meals.
  13. Salad forks, teaspoons, or smaller utensils would help you to serve little and eat less.
  14. Do not cut out on some of the foods that you love, instead cut down the portion of food.
  15. Try to make your food look more by serving it along with a salad.
  16. Dance your way to better health. You can show your kids those dance moves that you did when you were of their age. (The aim is to have some kind of physical activity). This is one of the best ways to prevent diabetes
  17. If you are not working, then turn up the music while doing your household chores.
  18. If you are working deliver a message to a co-worker in person instead of sending an email.
  19. Use the stairs in your office or if the office is in the 8th or 9th storey, then climb the stairs as far as you can and then you can use the elevator.
  20. Park your vehicle at a distance and then walk to your favorite mall or store.
  21. You can buy a fitness video and follow it every day.
  22. Now, coming to snacking, try to snack on fresh vegetables or fruits.
  23. Try eating different foods and mainly those dishes that contain more vegetables and grains.
  24. Cook using different spices instead of salt.
  25. Drink plenty of water and you can do this by finding a water bottle that you really like.
  26. Keep in hand a healthy snack like a handful of nuts, whole grain crackers, or fresh fruits.
  27. You can even choose veggie toppings like broccoli, peppers, and spinach for your pizza.
  28. Choose foods that have no added or very little sugar. Try recipes for broiling or baking chicken, fish, and meat.
  29. Eat foods made of whole grain like whole wheat, whole grain corn, brown rice, and oats.
  30. Choose foods after reading the food labels like low in trans fats, saturated fats, salt, cholesterol, and sugars.
  31. Try to maintain a journal of what you eat as it helps you to know whether you have had any foods high in calories or fats or if you?ve overeaten. This is one of the best ways to prevent diabetes.
  32. Nurture your body, mind, and soul by doing meditation, trying relaxation techniques like deep breathing exercises.
  33. You can actually start by learning an activity or do anything new. This would surely help you.
  34. Do not overeat out of frustration or boredom, instead try to do something like take a long walk or listen to music. (Do anything that you enjoy, but don?t overeat).
  35. Be creative and take care of your health, which the most precious gift that God has give you.

These are some of the top ways to prevent diabetes completely. I hope that you would follow them for a healthy and diabetic free life! So, eat healthy, exercise, and be happy!!! Promote Health and Prevent Diabetes!!!

Windows 8 goes live, marking a 'new era' for Microsoft

Windows 8 officially launched today at a press event in New York. So is the new Microsoft OS any good??

By Matthew Shaer / October 25, 2012

Windows 8 has officially launched, thus inaugurating a "new era for Microsoft and our customers," Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer said at a press event in midtown New York.

Beginning today, Windows 8 will be available on a range of devices, including desktops, laptops, and?Surface tablet computers.?

"With Windows 8, we have brought together the best of all worlds, the PC and the tablet, your work and your life," Ballmer said at the event, according to The Wall Street Journal.?

In a separate address, Steven Sinofsky, who heads the Windows team at Microsoft, announced that Windows 8 had undergone approximately 1.24 billion hours of public testing in 190 countries. (Horizons readers will remember that Windows 8 launched in "consumer preview" mode way back in February.)?"No product anywhere receives this kind of testing anywhere in the world," Sinofsky said.?

So has all that testing paid off? Well, early reviews of the new OS are largely positive. CNN calls it a "big, beautiful, slightly shaky step forward."

Writing at the Guardian, Charles Arthur says Microsoft really couldn't have done anything else: "The desktop paradigm is getting tired, and the tiles approach is fresh and quickly becomes intuitive."?

And here's Tom Warren of the Verge, who awarded Windows 8 extremely high marks across the board:?

Windows 8 is a beautiful operating system and one that feels incredibly personal once it?s customized. Microsoft has a huge fight on its hands now to ensure developers create beautiful apps. Some of the best Android and iOS apps are created by organizations or individuals who have showed little interest in Microsoft. If the software maker can change people?s perceptions of Windows, from viruses to bluescreens, into one of speed and style then the apps will flow and Microsoft has a hit on its hands.?

In related news, reviews of the new Microsoft Surface tablet began trickling out yesterday.

And the consensus there may sound familiar: The Surface is a solid, beautiful device, critics say. If only it had more apps!

"If you're an early adopter willing to forget everything you know about navigating a computer, the Surface tablet could replace your laptop. Everyone else: wait for more apps," one reviewer wrote.?

The Karma sedan allows the driver to select between two driving modes: Stealth mode for relaxed all-electric driving and Sport mode to access the vehicle's full power. The EVer powertrain on the Karma sedan uses dual electric motors to drive the wheels - the gasoline engine never directly drives the wheels.

Wyoming Democrat wages lonely congressional fight

(AP) ? Chris Henrichsen's hopeful knocking on doors only disturbed the afternoon naps of dogs in a previously quiet Casper neighborhood. Then he finally hit pay dirt: Someone actually answered.

Standing behind a security door, the woman let Henrichsen blurt out a few words, then cut him off. "Running for Congress?" she said. "What party?"

Democrat, Henrichsen replied.

"Wrong house. I'm sorry," she said, slamming the door.

There have been many days like this for the Henrichsen, a political unknown who has virtually no chance of stopping Republican U.S. Rep. Cynthia Lummis from keeping Republican Wyoming's lone U.S. House seat.

Henrichsen, a large man with perpetually rumpled clothes, has logged 5,000 miles in his Suburban, sleeping occasionally in it, to meet with anyone in any corner of Wyoming willing to listen to him. He has no money for staff and travels the highways alone or with his wife and their three young children. But he won't quit.

"I also know that if I stop doing anything today, stop talking to reporters, if I stop knocking on the doors that I can, it goes from slim to zero," explained the 35-year-old Casper College political science instructor.

It's not unheard of for Democrats to win in Wyoming: Three of the last five governors were Democrats. It is, however, difficult, with Republican voters outnumbering Democrats better than 3-to-1.

"I've been there. It's a lonely place," said Democrat Mike Sullivan, the governor from 1987 to 1995. "I know what it's like when there's just the two of you, or maybe even one of you, out on the trail."

The task is even more challenging for Henrichsen, a political newcomer, against Lummis, a well-connected, former state treasurer and state legislator who holds the seat once held by former Vice President Dick Cheney.

In federal financial reports filed in August, Lummis, who's seeking her third term and is state chair of Mitt Romney's campaign, reported raising more than $500,000. Henrichsen was below the $5,000 level needed even to submit a report.

Henrichsen is hardly a typical Democrat. He's a self-described "pro-life" candidate who opposes increased gun control in a state that is among the highest in per-capita gun ownership and where hunting is a proud tradition.

In the political vacuum that is Wyoming Democratic Party politics, Henrichsen faced no opposition in this summer's primary election. He's getting no money from the national or state parties. The national party has larger concerns, and the state party is in apparent free fall, increasingly unable to muster many candidates.

Henrichsen criticized the state party in August, saying it was content to raise money for out-of-state races while neglecting homegrown candidates. Since then, he's tried to convince Wyoming voters that he won't be beholden to Nancy Pelosi when he gets elected.

Henrichsen also said he's received some Democrat backlash about his Mormon faith and his church's opposition to same-sex marriage. "People don't like it," he said.

Robin Van Ausdall, executive director of the Wyoming Democratic Party, said the party is putting its efforts into state legislative races.

"He's not out in the wilderness," she insisted, noting that individual Democrats support him. Rather, she said, it's tough for any Democratic candidate running down-ticket in a presidential election year in Wyoming. In 2008, John McCain defeated Barack Obama here by 65-33 percent.

Henrichsen said Democrats here suffer from popular suspicion that they are would-be gun-grabbers. Too many, he added, are liberal activists who have "gotten comfortable sort of being proud that they're in the minority on those (social) issues, but they're not the issues that are going to build connections with other people" in Wyoming.

If elected, Henrichsen said, he'll work to reduce the deficit, hewing closely to the recommendations laid out by the commission headed by former Wyoming Sen. Alan Simpson and ex-White House chief of staff Erskine Bowles.

"Right now, we have an approach where one side says, 'this is off the table,' and the other side says 'this is off the table,' and there's nothing left on the table," Henrichsen said.

One recent evening, Henrichsen loaded his daughter Geneva, 7, into the family's Suburban for a 300-mile roundtrip run from Casper to Laramie, home to the University of Wyoming and a Democratic oasis, to speak at a library.

About two dozen party faithful showed. They munched free cookies as Henrichsen told them there are so few Democrats on Wyoming ballots that he almost feels almost like he's Obama's state running mate.

Then, he went home.
