Colorado State University student Joseph Phipott lost his life to an avalanche this past weekend. The 26 year-old was skiing in the backcountry with friend, Alex White, in an area near Nokhu Crags, south of Cameron Pass.
According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, the two skiers had reached the bottom of their run when a dog who had been traveling with them, triggered the deadly slide. Miraculously, 24 year old Alex White survived, even after being trapped under the snow for over three hours before being?recovered. White was evacuated?to a nearby hospital via helicopter, USA Today?reports that he is in fair condition.?While it is unfortunate that Phipott was killed by the avalanche, his family members are taking comfort in the knowledge that he died doing what he loved.
This is the 4th avalanche-related fatality in Colorado this year, and one of the largest slides in recent memory.
The CAIC reports that there remains a significant probability for subsequent avalanches in the state. They cite westerly winds which continue to build wind slabs near and above treeline areas. The current trend of sunny, warm weather could promote wet loose snow in the afternoon.
If you plan on riding the backcountry or sidecountry, check the reports, bring your avi beacon and stay vigilant!
