'Connect Pritect to Protect Kinect:' for all your tinfoil helmet needs

Have you considered that if a secretive governmental cabal seized control of your Kinect, it would be able to spy on you as you lurched awkwardly to Just Dance? Such is the price we pay for abrogating our right to privacy, or at least it was until Catalyst Components came up with a solution. Connect Pritect to Protect Kinect is a high-gloss plastic shield that clips over your device to block the sensor bar's cameras from prying eyes. The only chink in the armor is a tiny hole for the Xbox logo -- the efficacy of which is shown after the break. Freedom from surveillance will cost you a meager $15 from Target, Microcenter, Best Buy and Amazon.

Swift invites teen with leukemia to awards show

Dan Steinberg / AP

By Natalie Finn, E! Online

Taylor Swift knows from "Mean." And it turns out she's also pretty familiar with being absolutely lovely.

The country-pop superstar regretfully had to turn down an invitation to attend a prom in New Jersey with 18-year-old Kevin McGuire, who's battling leukemia.

But Swift came up with one heck of an alternative!

MORE: Zac Efron and Taylor Swift: Not dating, just dueting

"Kevin, I'm so sorry but I won't be able to make it to your prom," Swift wrote on Facebook today. "But I was wondering, the ACM Awards are coming up. Would you be my date? Love, Taylor"

?Well, shoot!

What were the chances that, assuming McGuire is able to go, he would turn that down?!

"I don't know what else to say," he said, per Philadelphia's CBS 3. "I was just trying not to throw up!"

"I have cancer. Cancer doesn't have me," he added. "Taylor, I would love to go with you."

The idea of getting Taylor to go to the Sterling High School prom in Somerdale, N.J., originated with McGuire's big sister, Tori. Knowing that her brother's spirits needed lifting, Tori started the Facebook page "Taylor Swift take KEVIN MCGUIRE TO PROM! "

MORE: Watch the video for Taylor's Hunger Games tune, "Safe & Sound"

"Kevin is the kindest, most noble 18-year-old a person could even fathom meeting," Tori wrote, "and throughout his ups and downs Kevin never even questioned 'why me?' Nothing, and I mean NOTHING brightens Kevin's day more than Taylor Swift."

McGuire, a varsity football player, was first diagnosed with leukemia when he was 13 and had been in remission since 2010 but recently suffered a relapse.

He is currently undergoing treatment at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia--and it's an interview he gave to Philly's Fox 29 about Tori's efforts that really helped get the ball rolling on Twitter and Facebook. Swift ended up hearing the news while in Australia promoting her latest film, The Lorax.

While 93,840 people have liked the idea of Swift going to the prom in June, 71,417 already adore the idea of McGuire going to the Academy of Country Music Awards with her on April 1.

And we have a feeling the number of likes will skyrocket.

Popular Dieting ? Fat Loss 4 Idiots

Fat Loss 4 Idiots is a relatively new diet that guarantees participants to lose 9 pounds every 11 days. The home page of FL4 Idiots stresses the idea that most popular diets or dieting products just don?t work.

With low fat foods being first, it states the fact that even though low fat foods have been in the spotlight for 15 years, our society as a whole continues to become more overweight as time goes on. This is definitely a good case against low fat foods effecting the entire population, but that doesn?t mean that everyone who grocery shops even buys low fat foods, let alone enough for low fat foods to have an effect on their health.

According to Fat Loss 4 Idiots, Low calorie diets are an illogical way to lose weight because consuming fewer calories actually slows down your metabolism, which turns off your body?s ?fat burning engine?.

A low calorie diet plan may initially allow for the dieter to lose a few pounds, but also causes a ?dieting plateau?, where all weight loss stops.

The most popular of the mentioned diet plans is Low Carb. Fat Loss 4 Idiots says that Low Carb diets are too strict and generally too hard to maintain for average people wanting to lose weight. It also says that Low Carb diets ?rob? your body of energy, making it even more difficult for dieters to stick with the plan. It never proves that Low Carb doesn?t work.

Lastly, Fat Loss 4 Idiots compares itself with Genny Craig and Weight Watchers, which include both dieting and exercising. Both of these weight loss programs do work, but they?re designed to work slowly (2 to 3 pounds per week). They also require participants to buy special meals and supplements in the initial phase of the weight loss plan, while FL4 Idiots is designed for rapid weight loss.

By discrediting the most popular ways to lose weight, the creators of Fat Loss 4 Idiots are presenting the idea that their ?accelerated fat burning? diet comes with none of the cons of other popular diets.

This very well could be true, but what does the Fat Loss 4 Idiots diet plan consist of?

The few things that they mention about their system are very appealing to people who have had experience with the other weight loss programs listed on the home page. Fat Loss 4 Idiots stresses the fact that ?food is not enemy?, and that dieters will actually be eating more food while following their diet plan. With the right foods and the right intervals, eating more than usual causes fat burning hormones to ?turn on?, and fat storing hormones to ?turn off?. FL4 Idiots actually requires the dieter to eat more than 3 meals per day. After 11 days of following their diet plan, there are 3 days of eating anything you want.

Aside from their marketing techniques, Fat Loss 4 Idiots appears to be a legitimate diet, focusing more on utilizing your body?s natural hormones as a way of burning fat.

The Business of HR : Weblog

The Bucket List

February 18, 2012 - by Mark I am big on setting goals, for work and life. Some people call their goals a "bucket list". Things to accomplish in one's lifetime. I made my list when I was 35 and going thru a rough patch in my work and life. I am happy to say that once I made a bucket list, I also started to make committments to achieve the business items on the list. One was change careers and be an HR professional, another was make it to a senior level and be acknowledged for doing something important in my new chosen field. Well it took a few years but I succeeded in accomplishing all of these and even surpassed my own goals. Now my focus is shifting to a couple of non - business items - although I still have 2 career goals left to accomplish. Having the list keeps me focused and gives me purpose. I wish I had made this list earlier in my life, maybe even as early as my college years. I don't really know if that would have been practical back then, however had I done so maybe I would be in a different place today (or maybe life is just a box of chocolates). For students it's a question worth pondering and for some acting upon now. Have some goals and work towards attaining them. Don't wait like I did and enjoy the journey.

Beware Of The Universal Law Of Attraction | Self Improvement Blogs ...

I personally imagine in the limitless possibilities of Common Regulation of Attraction. Through my analysis I have discovered much of our biggest inventors in history used this legislation to their benefit. How did they do that?

It is my understanding that utilizing this Universal Law of Attraction to one of the best of its potential entails the following process:

(1) Thought/Idea
(2) Dream
(3) Targets
(4) Affirmations
(5) Visualize
(6) Plan
(7) Motion

I believe step one to create anything into your life begins with a mere thought or idea. Should you like the idea sufficient you may determine to personal it as your dream. A dream is just a dream with out creating some goals to make it a reality. While not a necessity, creating affirmations and visualizing are powerful tools to assist within the achievement of your dream. Pulling all of this together right into a plan helps you?re taking the action required to make your dream a reality.

Nonetheless, reader beware! A lot of what?s being taught right now on this subject is unrealistic. The true risks of this Common Regulation lies within the interpretation. While you can easily manifest issues into your life, the question remains, ?Is it sustainable??

Now shall we say your belief in the Universal Legislation of Attraction ignites within you a dream to stay in a spacious, lovely house stuffed with nice furnishings, complete with all the newest appliances. You dream it, you believe it and you decide you will go for it. You then manage to finance a mortgage complete with new family furnishings and appliances. In truth, through the process you also decide to succeed in for the celebs and finance a new vehicle. Life appears to be like great, you will have it all. Or do you? What occurs after you complete the financing? You?re left with large debts to repay. Not solely may this cause?logitech coupon quite a lot of strain in your revenue but it could easily turn into unsustainable if life throws lemons your way. No one plans on unemployment, sickness, divorce, loss of life or many other unlucky situations.

I counsel preserving yourself grounded while applying the Common Law of Attraction to chase your dream. Please perceive, I am on no account suggesting you not follow your dreams. I am an achiever believing you can obtain anything you dream. I know this to be true because I have created a new life for myself towards all odds.

What I am suggesting is to take one step at a time. In case you have a dream to shoot for the stars, go for it. Just don?t overshoot in a rush to get there. The pursuit of all dreams requires persistence, persistence, willpower, faith and courage.

The dream of living in a spacious, stunning residence filled with nice furnishings, complete with all the most recent home equipment is attainable to anybody keen to pay the price. Life is all about choices. Selecting the easy route by financing your whole dream life may cause it to return crashing down round you if you least count on it. Defining clear objectives, whereas taking all mandatory motion towards your dream, might take some time to realize your dream but achieve you will. As soon as achieved it can be yours for the protecting, not for the collectors to repossess.

Al Wasl chairman: Aim is to keep Maradona happy

Associated Press Sports

updated 8:58 a.m. ET Feb. 15, 2012

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -The chairman of Al Wasl says his aim is to keep coach Diego Maradona happy.

Maradona said last week that he would consider leaving the UAE club if the player budget wasn't increased significantly next season, complaining he wasn't able to compete with other teams.

On Wednesday, Marwan bin Beyat said he had not heard directly from Maradona about his concerns but said his aim was to "always make him happy." He said he has told Maradona to put "his requirements for next season in writing" and they would be discussed.

Maradona signed a two-year deal with the club in May.

OncoPep signs license agreement with Dana-Farber for cancer vaccine technology

PBR Staff Writer
Published 14 February 2012

OncoPep has signed an exclusive, worldwide license agreement with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for a multi-peptide therapeutic cancer vaccine technology.

Financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.

PVX-410, the first vaccine developed from this technology, is designed to target multiple myeloma cells.

A Phase 1/2a trial, in which PVX-410 will be studied in patients with smoldering multiple myeloma, is planned for 2012.

PVX-410 is composed of four proprietary, synthetic peptides to form a therapeutic cancer vaccine, which is designed to target specific antigens found on the surface of multiple myeloma cells.

PVX-410 has demonstrated the ability to stimulate a strong immune response against multiple myeloma cell lines and patient cells in vitro.

OncoPep CEO Doris Peterkin said the license with Dana-Farber provides them with an underlying technology that will give the company the opportunity to develop additional therapeutic vaccine candidates in the future.

Diddy Lends 'Extra Spice' To French Montana's 'Shot Callers'

Diddy joins Rick Ross, Montana and Charlie Rock in new clip for 'Shot Callers' remix.

Nobody does a remix like Diddy — at least according to his Bad Boy protégé French Montana.

The New York MC brought in his boss and big brother Rick Ross to make the video for his new "Shot Callers" remix.

Montana gave props to Ricky Rozay for reporting to the video set on his birthday, saying it's that kind of sacrifice that motivates him to work hard.

"You know, that's what I'm saying. That's motivation for anybody out there. When you got the hottest cat in the game, on his birthday he's coming to work," Montana said.

For his part, Ross said watching some of his original rap mentors motivated him to be the best. "When we was coming up watching, you know, even if it was Rob Bass in the silk sweat suit with his chains on and the suede Ballys, that motivated me, you know what I'm saying? So that's what we do," he says.

Both rappers can be seen on set, dressed in all black with thick gold chains and rocking to the Lords of the Underground "Funky Child" sample along with Charlie Rock and the clip's chief creative officer, Diddy.

"You know Diddy, man — when he jumps on the track, he just gives it the extra spice, you know what I'm saying?" Montana laughed. "Definitely shout out to Diddy. He gave it that energy. You know, Diddy, he's the number-one best dude you want on your remix. Diddy's on the remix, the remix ... you know what I'm saying?"

"His talk is priceless," Ross said, co-signing the collaboration. "When you get Puff to touch that record, it's priceless."

Diddy predicts the remix video and song — which Montana also remade recently to honor new Super Bowl champs the New York Giants — are gonna be huge.

"You'll see, you know, this video all over the air, you'll hear it all over the radio stations," Diddy said about the clip. "And then from there, that's, you know — especially with new hip-hop artists — that's their dream to be able to get that shot and you know how to facilitate that shot."

An air date for the new clip hasn't been announced.

Straight or gay, responsible parenting is needed | oliviasview

Over the weekend there were articles in both the Guardian and Sunday Times about the Court of Appeal case I highlighted last week regarding the lesbian couple who are in dispute with their ?donor? over access to a child created between them (No Legislating for Feelings 7th February ). ?Charlie Condou in the Family section of The Guardian uses his column to pour scorn on the apparent lack of thought that went into the agreement that was made between the women concerned and their donor, who according to the Sunday Times, was the gay ex-husband of one of the women. ? Condou himself has two children with his gay partner Cameron and Catherine, a friend whom the men had about two years of discussion with before going ahead with trying to conceive. ?As Condou says, ?The mothers did not choose an anonymous sperm donor ? presumably because they wanted their child to know who his father was ? they chose a friend. ?A friend who was present at his son?s birth and who has been active in his life. ?He is a father, and they, as mothers, don?t have a right to put a limit on how he expresses that, whatever they think they agreed over a bottle of wine. ?The child has a father who loves him and wants to be in his life, and the child has every right to that relationship.? ?In fact it?s all to do with relationships and really nothing to do with sexuality.

Giles Hattersley in the Sunday Times talks to Alison Burt a solicitor with a family law firm that is seeing an increasing number of difficult and upsetting situations occurring with complicated and un-thought out parenting arrangements. ?Sam Dick, head of policy at Stonewall advocates that gay and lesbian parents when seeking someone of the opposite sex to help them have a child, have a long ?dating? period where they get to know each other very well before deciding to go ahead. ?Condou is adamant that everyone must understand to the letter what the term ?involvement? means. ? All interviewees agree that ??Until you have a child you have no idea of the intensity of emotions that rise? and that everyone has to be as prepared as they possibly can be to reconsider arrangements and compromise in the interests of the child. ?This being something the women in the current case seem very reluctant to do.

In the meantime the lovely Elizabeth Marquardt asks Do Mothers Matter? in this weekend?s edition of The Atlantic. ?I hesitate to mention this as each time I criticise this woman armies of her supporters come out of the woodwork to post their strongly held views about what I have to say. ?But I can?t let this pass.

In this article Marquardt starts by proposing that not having a mother was, until recently, widely regarded to be a tragedy. ?She then goes on to list ways in which children have historically been separated from their mother and how painful this is for mother and child. ?And of course no-one would disagree that any forced separation between parent and child where there had been a bond of love and attachment is something to be avoided at all possible cost. ?The argument then moves from one where mother and child are separated to that of egg donation and surrogacy where the parents are gay men and two women, neither of them intending to be mothers, helped them to have a child. ?This is a new form of unconventional family ? yet another way in which what we mean by family in evolving in the modern world ? but lesbian couples have been having children together for a long time now and research shows that their children do very well. ?No father there.

Is there something special about a woman that makes her more likely to be missed than a man in the family? ?I don?t think so. ?Men cannot breast feed but they can be equally nurturing and supportive of their children, providing warmth and comfort as well as boundaries and boisterous play. ?I?m not dismissing the positive roles that both a father and a mother can play in children?s lives but same sex couples are likely to bring a range of qualities to their parenting that fulfil the needs their children have. ?Heterosexual parents who are left on their own with children find that they develop the qualities that the other parent used to bring. ?Not having a man or a woman in the house does not necessarily mean that children are missing anything.

Marquardt?s underlying position is always that anything other than a heterosexual couple family with children conceived with their own gametes, is inevitably damaging for children. ?Donors are viewed as ?parents? who have given up their children to be raised by others and non-genetically connected parents are raising ?other people?s children?. ?In her methodologically flawed study My Daddy?s Name is Donor and quoted in the Atlantic article, she shockingly claims that ?Compared to their peers raised by biological parents, sperm-donor conceived persons are more likely to struggle with delinquency, addiction and depression.? ?Whilst she has every right to her views on the way in which families are changing, Marquardt has no right to make such statements about donor conceived people in general.

To return to the questions raised at the beginning of this post, it is vital that men and women, straight and gay, understand what they are doing when they bring children into the world. ?Adult relationships may be evolving but children?s needs for love, nurture and security do not change. ?These needs can be met by same sex as well as heterosexual couples, those who are not genetically connected to a child as well as those who are. ?Mums and dads (in same or different sex couples) are those people who are there for their children day in and day out. ?Donors are important too but in a different way. ?They are not parents who have abandoned their children but contributors of a vital ingredient to life. ?They deserve thanks, recognition for their gift and (ideally) their willingness to make a connection with a young person who needs to know more about them. ?Mature responsible parents; mature, responsible donors. ?Happy children.

Terror trial of accused Bali bomber starts Monday (AP)

JAKARTA, Indonesia ? An Indonesian accused of making the explosives used in the 2002 Bali bombings is scheduled to go on trial next week on terrorism and murder charges, a court official said Thursday.

Umar Patek, 41, was Asia's most wanted terror suspect with a $1 million bounty on his head when authorities caught up with him Jan. 25, 2011, in Abbottabad, Pakistan ? the same town where Osama bin Laden was killed in a U.S. commando attack four months later.

He will be tried at the West Jakarta District Court beginning Monday, said court spokesman Mirdin Alamsyah. Another court official, Ricar Nasution, said the five-judge panel would be led by the court's chief, Lexsy Mamoto.

Patek was extradited last August, and Indonesian officials say he confessed to being a key participant in the bombings on Bali island, Southeast Asia's deadliest terror attack, which killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists.

He has admitted to help assemble the 2,250-pound (1,020-kilogram) bomb that was hidden inside a van and exploded just before midnight, flattening two nightclubs and leaving a deep crater.

He also admitted to making the bombs used in Christmas Eve attacks on churches in 2000 that killed 19 people, authorities said.

Patek, whose real name is Hisyam Bin Alizein and who has several aliases, could face death by firing squad if convicted of various terror-related charges and premeditated murder.

Ashluddin Hatjani, one of his lawyers, said based on the indictment to be submitted by the prosecutors, Patek would be charged under both the harsh anti-terror law and the criminal code.

"On the terror law, the charges range from hiding information about terrorism to illegal possession of explosives and evil conspiracy to commit terrorism," Hatjani told the Associated Press. The charges carry a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

"While under the criminal code, he will be charged with premeditated murder" which carries a maximum of the death penalty, Hatjani said. Some 10 lawyers are defending him.

Patek is believed to have valuable intelligence about al-Qaida and links with its Southeast Asia affiliate, Jemaah Islamiyah, blamed for the Bali bombings and all other major attacks in Indonesia.

Three of the masterminds of the Bali attacks ? Imam Samudra, and brothers Amrozi Nurhasyim and Ali Ghufron ? were executed in late 2008.

Patek fled to the Philippines after the Bali bombings and allegedly collaborated with Abu Sayyaf in training militants and plotting attacks, including against American troops. He returned to Indonesia in 2009, making contacts and training militants, before going to Pakistan in August 2010, authorities say.

Many of the Bali bombing suspects have been convicted and were killed during a police raid in 2010. Patek is believed to be the last key suspect in the attack.

Greece caves in on civil service firings (AP)

ATHENS, Greece ? Greece's coalition government caved in to demands to cut civil service jobs, announcing 15,000 positions would go this year, amid mounting international pressure to agree on austerity measures needed to secure major new debt agreements.

The announcement Monday signals a shift in Greece's policy, as state jobs have so far been protected during the country's acute financial crisis, which started about two years ago. Public Sector Reform Minister Dimitris Reppas said the job cuts would be carried out under a new law that allows such firings.

Unions have called a 24-hour general strike for Tuesday, in response to the new austerity measures, while about 4,000 protesters braved torrential rain late Monday to join protest rallies organized in central Athens by left-wing opposition parties.

Greece is racing to push through the painful reforms ? which have yet to be agreed to by Greece's coalition partners ? to clinch a euro130 billion ($170 billion) bailout deal from its European partners and the International Monetary Fund and avoid a March default on its bond repayments.

Debt-ridden Greece has been kept solvent since May 2010 by payments from a euro110 billion ($145 billion) international rescue loan package. When it became clear the money would not be enough, a second bailout was decided last October.

As well as the austerity measures, the bailout also depends on separate talks with banks and other private bondholders to forgive euro100 billion ($131.6 billion) in Greek debt. The private investors have been locked in negotiations over swapping their current debt for a cash payment and new bonds worth 50 percent less than the original face value, longer repayment terms and a cut in the interest rate to be paid on the bonds. Greek government officials say they expect private investors to take an overall cut of up to 70 percent on the value of their bonds.

However, the EU-IMF bailout has to be secured for the deal with private investors to go ahead as about euro30 billion from the bailout will be used as the cash payment in the bond swap deal.

Greece's coalition party leaders pushed back a key meeting on the austerity measures by a day until Tuesday, due to the ongoing negotiations with EU-IMF debt inspectors who were locked in talks with the government Monday.

The leaders have already agreed to cut 2012 spending by 1.5 percent of gross domestic product ? about euro3.3 billion ($4.3 billion) ? improve competitiveness by slashing wages and non-wage costs, and re-capitalize banks without nationalizing them.

Creditors are also demanding spending cuts in defense, health and social security, a cut in the minimum wage, as well as the civil service layoffs, as European pressure increased on Greece to make more concessions.

The government has promised to reduce the 750,000-strong broader public sector by 150,000 by the end of 2015, but has so far insisted it could reach that target through staff attrition.

"We are opposed to indiscriminate firings," Reppas said. "The work force reduction is strictly connected with the restructuring of services and organizations at each ministry."

Officials at the Public Sector Reform Ministry gave no details of the new plan, nor would they say how many of the job cuts would be compulsory.

European Commission spokesman Amadeu Altafaj Tardio said Greece is already "beyond the deadline" to end the talks.

After talks in Paris with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said there can be no bailout deal unless Athens implements creditors' proposals.

"(The proposals) are on the table," she said. "And time is pressing. Therefore something has to happen quickly."

"Time is pressing and for the entire eurozone much is at stake," Merkel added.

In Athens, talks between the government and debt inspectors from the EU, IMF and the European Central Bank ? known as the troika ? dragged into early Tuesday.

"The negotiations with the troika are ongoing for the new loan program. It is clear that there is a lot of pressure being put on the country. A lot of pressure is being placed on the Greek people," Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said during a break in the talks.

He called on coalition parties to end the bickering and work more closely together.

"No one is as strong as Hercules on his own to face the Lernaean Hydra," a swamp monster in Greek mythology, he said. "We must all, together, fight this battle, without petty party motives and slick moves."

Greece is in its fifth year of recession, while unemployment has hit record highs of about 19 percent ? following a spate of austerity measures in return for the rescue loans, that included significant cuts in pensions and salaries coupled with repeated tax hikes and an increase in retirement ages.

"The current policy of austerity ... is turning workers into pariahs, jobless people and pensioners into paupers and deprives our youth of any hope," a statement from the main civil servants' union ADEDY said. "This policy has already pushed Greeks beyond their limits and must be stopped at any cost."

Yiannis Panagopoulos, leader of Greece's largest union, the GSEE, said the creditors' demands were certain to lead to more hardship.

"What is going on is not a negotiation," he said. "It's blunt, cynical blackmail targeting an entire people."

The reader also gets a chance to look at further information with the help of the references cited.

As a medical writer, you also need to stay within the regulatory limits set by your particular national or international agencies while making medical claims. You should keep in mind that the language you use in your writing follows the particular law of your country as far as medical claims are concerned.

Quick analysis and fast writing are essential to succeed in this job. If you are using this profession to foot your bills, you will need to come up with an article quickly. Do You Like This Article?

Just getting started in real estate investing or old sources of properties running dry? Check out the following 6 sources of discounted homes which may be a great fit for your house flipping business.

1. FSBOs

Believe it or not there are still homeowners out there who have equity or even own their homes free and clear and who are ready to deal. Unfortunately those who have signed up for some for sale by owner sites may have invested thousands in junk marketing but there are nuggets to be found. Data and lead list companies can help you target those with the most equity for a variety of marketing campaigns.

2. Probate Properties

With so many new players and old players jumping into real estate investing today it can make a lot of sense to find a niche and own it. Probate and estate sales could be just the ticket you need, offering discounted homes and motivated sellers.

3. Condemned Properties

More investors are inquiring about real estate investing in condemned homes. You need to be very careful here as there is obviously a reason they are in trouble but you could find some amazing deals which aren?t that difficult to flip if you do your due diligence correctly.

4. Realtors

Real estate investing newbies and long time pros alike often immediately turn their noses up when they hear Realtor. However, more often than not this is because they are told to, not because they have had an endless string of bad experiences using them themselves. Find one or two great ones, negotiate discounted rates and make sure you have a constant stream of homes to look at every morning.

5. REOs

While their is a lot of talk about bank owned REOs going away, at least for the average investor they are still up for grabs right now. You can even often find them by walking into your local bank branch though you may find more luck and less competition approaching smaller banks than the bigger nationwide chains.

6. Wholesalers

For those looking for the best of both worlds; a constant stream of properties offering big discounts, without a huge investment in marketing and hours a week scouting for deals one at a time then hooking up with 2 or 3 great wholesalers might be the answer.

Analysis: Middle East turmoil draws Turkey and Iraqi Kurds (Reuters)

ARBIL, Iraq (Reuters) ? Upheaval in the Middle East and mutual economic interests are drawing together two unlikely partners; rising powerhouse Turkey and an entity whose name Turkish leaders hardly dare mention - Kurdistan, the semi-autonomous region of northern Iraq.

Ankara has developed solid political and trade ties with Iraq's Kurds, as its foreign policy of "zero problems with the neighbors" unravels due to the uprising in Syria, tensions with Baghdad and rivalry with Iran.

Iraqi Kurdish leaders also recognize that in an unstable region and with sectarian conflict threatening to upset the delicate political balance in Baghdad, their landlocked, oil producing territory needs an ally among its neighbors.

Turkey, with one of the fastest growing economies in the world, could be their best bet.

"We can call it a key relationship because Turkey has an important status because of its location and because of the role that it plays in the international community," said Falah Mustafa Bakir, the head of the Department of Foreign Relations of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

"Turkey is a major partner for Iraq as a whole, but also for the Kurdistan region in terms of commerce and trade," he told Reuters in a recent interview. "I am sure Turkey would have a good opportunity to be a major or main partner with the KRG, but also with Iraq."

But big issues remain, not least the presence in northern Iraq of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), a militant group whose 27-year armed campaign for Kurdish self-rule in Turkey has claimed the lives of 40,000 rebels, soldiers and civilians.

Turkish leaders are also reluctant to see the emergence of a Kurdish state in northern Iraq, fearing this could rouse the already restless Kurds just across the border in Turkey.

In a landmark visit to the region last year, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan repeatedly referred to the "Kurdish administration," but never once used the word Kurdistan.

PIPELINE DIPLOMACY

Victims of massacres and chemical weapons attacks, Iraq's Kurds rose up against Saddam Hussein during the 1991 Gulf War and broke free from Baghdad-rule. The 2003 U.S.-led invasion then toppled the dictator and led to a constitution that recognized the Kurds' hard-won de facto autonomy.

Once the poorest region of Iraq, Kurdistan is now its most prosperous, insulated from the insurgency and sectarian violence in the south by its mountains and stable government.

For now the region largely depends on receiving 17 percent of the national budget, but the regional government estimates there are about 45 billion barrels of oil reserves in the north, most of it as yet untapped.

Oil majors, analysts say, are expected to follow the lead of Exxon Mobil and sign exploration and production deals with the regional government. This should help to raise production, estimated to reach 175,000 barrels per day this year, to 1 million bpd by 2015.

Kurdish oil exports are pumped into the Iraqi national pipeline system, but relations between the Kurds and Baghdad have been dogged for years by rows over late payments for crude, the legality of the regional government's oil deals and disputed territory.

Add to that the traditional distrust of Baghdad following Saddam's atrocities, the present political infighting in the capital and risk of renewed sectarian violence, and the Kurds feel they are right to look after their own interests.

That means the regional government becoming less reliant on Baghdad.

One pipeline pumping about 60,000 bpd already feeds directly from Kurdistan's Tawke oilfield into the main pipeline to the Turkish port of Ceyhan, and more are due to follow.

"Turkey is our port to Europe and the West," said a regional government official who declined to be named. "It is a member of NATO, and one day could join the European Union. It is a much better option than Baghdad or Iran."

With an economy growing at 8 percent last year, Turkey is hungry for energy and values a fast-growing market on its doorstep where it can sell its manufactured goods.

From the construction firms putting up new five-star hotels to accommodate Western oil executives flocking to the region, to banks, retailers and restaurants, more than half the foreign companies in Iraqi Kurdistan are Turkish. About 80 percent of goods sold in the region are made in Turkey.

Iraq as a whole is now Turkey's second biggest export market after Germany, selling more than $8 billion of goods last year. But according to Turkish Economy Minister Zafer Caglayan, about 70 percent of Turkey's exports to Iraq are to the north.

If the Kurdistan region were a country it would still be Turkey's eighth biggest export market.

A war of words between Erdogan and Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has also drawn Turkey closer to the Kurds. Erdogan has warned that Turkey would not remain silent if a sectarian conflict erupts in Iraq. Maliki has accused Erdogan of meddling.

Turkey has heavily courted the Kurds, along with Iraq's Sunni Arab parties in recent years, analysts said, but Maliki and Shi'ite parties remain allied to Iran.

STRATEGIC ALLIANCE

Involving Turkey in the economy of Iraqi Kurdistan may not be enough to ensure Ankara's enduring support, particularly while its soldiers are being killed by PKK militants whose leaders are based in the mountains of northern Iraq.

"For 30 years, we have paid a very heavy price for the terror directed here because of the lack of authority in Iraq, especially northern Iraq," Erdogan told his parliamentary deputies on Tuesday. Turkey, the United States and the European Union all classify the PKK as a terrorist organization.

Turkey has staged 28 operations into northern Iraq in pursuit of the PKK in the last 20 years, Kurdish officials said, so it is in the regional government's interests to help solve the problem if it is to seek closer ties with Turkey.

The regional government, made up of pro-Western conservative parties led by landowners, has little natural sympathy with the PKK, a group with Marxist roots.

But a military move against the Turkish Kurd militants by the regional government's forces would be extremely unpopular with Iraqi Kurds, and in any case when the two sides have clashed in the past the PKK have generally come out on top.

While Erdogan has granted some Kurdish language and cultural rights in Turkey to try to de-link the "Kurdish problem" from the "terrorism problem," secret peace talks between the Turkish state and the PKK broke down last year, Turkish media said.

Masoud Barzani, the regional president, and the government are working behind the scenes to bring the two sides back to negotiations, said a second official who declined to be named.

"I think violence only brings catastrophe," Barzani said when asked about efforts to mediate between Turkey and the PKK.

"I cannot call it a mediating role, but both sides know our view very clearly ... We only see a peaceful solution to this and the moment there is a need to follow a peaceful approach then we are ready to do whatever we can," he said in a recent interview.

"Turkey is the key alliance for us, politically and economically," said the second government official. "It is a strategic alliance for us, mutually beneficial for both sides."

Man in brain-eating case held in Conn. on $1M bond (AP)

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. ? A Florida man charged with hacking a homeless Connecticut man to death with an ax and eating his brain was ordered Wednesday to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Tyree Lincoln Smith, 35, stared blankly as he stood with his hands chained behind his back during his arraignment in Bridgeport Superior Court on a murder charge. It was his first court appearance since he was returned to Connecticut on Tuesday following his arrest last week in Lynn Haven, Fla.

The Connecticut Post (http://bit.ly/xAOpNn) reports that the judge ordered the evaluation at the urging of Smith's lawyer, Joseph Bruckmann, and ordered him to remain in custody in lieu of $1 million bond. The next hearing was scheduled for Feb. 14.

Smith, a Floridian who grew up in Ansonia, Conn., is charged in the Dec. 15 killing of Angel Gonzalez, whose body was found on the third floor of an abandoned home in Bridgeport.

Prosecutor Donal Collimore urged the judge to set a high bond, describing the crime as "extremely heinous."

Talitcha Frazier, a sister-in-law of the victim, said she remembered seeing Smith asking for change on the street.

"I think at the time I told him to get a job. I had no idea then that he had killed my brother-in-law," Frasier said on the courthouse steps after the hearing.

Smith came to the attention of authorities when his cousin in Connecticut contacted Bridgeport police about Gonzalez's slaying. She told detectives that Smith had arrived at her house Dec. 15 and said he wanted to "get blood on his hands" before going to the abandoned home, where he used to live, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

The next day, Smith returned to the cousin's house with blood on his pants, hands and an ax, the affidavit said. Police say he told his cousin he had "gotten his blood."

Smith's cousin said he told her that he was sleeping on a porch at the abandoned home when he was awakened by another man and invited inside. Then Smith described beating the man's face and head with the ax and collecting one of his eyes and some of his brain matter, which he consumed in a nearby cemetery, the affidavit said.

The cousin told detectives she called Smith's mother, who suggested to police on Dec. 16 that they check the abandoned home and that her son had "mental issues," the affidavit said.

Smith had left Connecticut for Florida on Friday on a bus, the cousin told detectives.

South Korea, Japan want U.S. to detail Iran sanctions (Reuters)

TOKYO/SEOUL (Reuters) ? South Korea and Japan will soon meet U.S. officials in Washington to ask how much oil they can import from Iran under new sanctions that leave the Asian nations with few alternative sources for energy, government officials said Wednesday.

Japan is the world's third biggest oil consumer, and South Korea is the fifth largest.

Both nations import significant amounts of crude from Iran, which they are under pressure to cut back to secure a waiver from a U.S. law imposing sanctions on financial institutions that trade with Iran's central bank.

Japan's foreign ministry said a delegation was due to hold talks in Washington Thursday as part of ongoing consultations and would seek clarity on the law, which is part of a raft of sanctions aimed at reining in Iran's nuclear ambitions.

"We don't know what the Americans want until we hold the meeting," a government official said.

The official said Japan would explain the nature of its trade with Iran, as well as ask the United States to exempt Japanese banks from sanctions. No concrete steps are expected to be agreed upon, he added.

South Korea's foreign ministry said a technical team was planning to visit the United States to discuss the Iranian sanctions, but would not give details about the trip.

Kurt Campbell, the top U.S. diplomat for East Asian Affairs, told reporters in Seoul the United States was keen to discuss the specifics of its sanctions with Japan and Korea soon.

"We welcome a prospective South Korean team coming to Washington to discuss specific aspects of various energy related and financial interactions between South Korea and Iran," he said.

"We want to work closely with countries like South Korea and Japan who have particular vulnerabilities in this regard."

South Korea, a key U.S. ally, has warned the United States it would have difficulty replacing Iranian crude supplies.

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak will visit major oil producers Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates next week to try and secure alternative sources of energy.

Popular Diabetes Drug Might Cut Pancreatic Cancer Risk: Study (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Jan. 31 (HealthDay News) -- A new Swiss-American study indicates that long-term use of the popular diabetes medication metformin may lower the risk of developing pancreatic cancer, at least among women.

The researchers also found that the long-term use of another class of diabetes medications known as sulfonylureas was associated with a "substantial" bump in pancreatic risk and long-term insulin use was linked to a bump in pancreatic cancer risk in men.

"This result is somewhat unexpected," the team wrote in its paper, which is published in the Jan. 31 online issue of The American Journal of Gastroenterology.

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth most deadly cancer in the United States, with an overall survival rate of less than 5 percent, even though it is fairly rare, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

The researchers noted that previous research has suggested that metformin may lower the risk for other cancers, breast and ovarian cancer in particular.

To explore metformin's protective potential against pancreatic cancer, the team sifted through drug prescription, diagnostic, hospitalization and fatality information that had been collected by the British "General Practice Research Database." The data also included significant demographic information, such as smoking, alcohol use and body mass index.

The team honed in on statistics regarding nearly 2,800 patients (all under the age of 90) who had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer for the first time between 1995 and 2009. Data concerning almost 16,600 patients who did not have pancreatic cancer was used as a comparison.

The result: Short-term use of metformin or sulfonylureas and/or insulin had no appreciable impact on pancreatic cancer risk.

However, long-term use of each of these medications did appear to have a sizeable impact on pancreatic cancer risk among diabetics. While female patients saw their risk go down with metformin treatment and up with sulfonylureas, male patients saw their risk go up with insulin.

Dr. Michael Choti, a professor of surgery and oncology at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, stressed the "importance of trying to identify causes for a devastating disease that is often diagnosed late."

"Over the years, many groups have tried to look at a variety of risk factors, dietary and other things, and there have been some reports over the years," he noted. "But nothing has really panned out well. So this is indeed an interesting study."

"But it's also important to say," Choti added, "that while these could be associations, we cannot really say that what we have here is a cause-and-effect. Pancreatic cancer is a multi-factorial disease. So, while it makes sense conceptually that these drugs could have an impact on the pancreas, which is a metabolic organ, it's still too early to be sure what's happening. And it's too early to recommend metformin as a preventive therapy for pancreatic cancer."

"So this is interesting and important," he said. "But it's not definitive."
